Warrior Nun Creator Shares Candid Update Almost 2 Years After The Show Was Supposedly Saved

Warrior Nun creator Simon Barry has shared a candid update on the status of the franchise almost two years after the show was supposed to have been saved. Netflix cancelled the fantasy action series in December 2022, leading to a massive, global fan campaign to bring Warrior Nun season 3 to life. Barry announced the show had been saved with a movie trilogy in 2023, but it was later revealed by executive producer Dean English the new project would not be continuing the story of the Netflix series. Since then, news has gone quiet surrounding the revival's progression.

Now, Barry has responded to a question about Warrior Nun's future, revealing he doesn't know its current status almost two years after announcing the show had been saved. He also mentions the death of Productivity Media CEO William Santor, the company having been the home for the series' revival. He apologizes for not having much info, but is still grateful for fan support of the show. Check out what Barry had to say below:

Warrior Nun is based on the comic Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn.

What Barry's Update Means For Warrior Nun's Future

The Franchise's Status Remains Up In The Air

When the Warrior Nun movie trilogy was originally announced, it was never specified that the upcoming plans for the show would not be based on the Netflix series. This didn't become apparent until a contest was held to redesign the series' Halo, which remains the last concrete update about the show's production. Since then, Productivity Media became involved in a financial probe prior to Santor's death, with reports of mismanaging funds. English later confirmed the setback would impact the development of the project.

Netflix has a disappointing habit of canceling fantasy TV shows too soon, but this one deserves consideration even though it ended early.

Barry's post emphasizes his lack of involvement in the movie trilogy, something that was not revealed until after he announced the franchise would be coming back. Since then, the former showrunner has illustrated his ideas for Warrior Nun season 3, which would have included Ava (Alba Baptista) in a villain role while working for Reya (Andrea Tivadar). As for the progression of the upcoming project, it remains to be seen what the story will be like and if the project is still being actively worked on.

Because Barry is no longer involved in Warrior Nun's development, he will likely remain in the dark about movie trilogy news until English or Productivity Media make a formal announcement. It's unfortunate that the former showrunner is unable to provide any concrete updates about the movies, especially when so little news has arrived since its announcement. It remains too be seen when the trilogy will arrive, and what it means for the franchise's future if the story isn't the same as its Netflix predecessor.
