“We Fear No One”: What Helena Eagan’s Threat Really Means In Severance Season 2
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Severance season 2's episode 2.Helena snaps back at Ms Cobel in Severance season 2's episode 2 and claims that they fear no one, which makes it hard not to wonder what she means. Despite growing bitter towards her relationship with Lumon after Severance season 1's events, Cobel remains open to settling things with the company. However, to her dismay, Helena refuses to have her as the manager of the severed floor again. She tells her the company can only have her back as a member of the newly formed Severance Advisory Board.
Frustrated by how Lumon pays her back for her loyalty, Cobel confronts Helena in Severance season 2's episode 2 by claiming that they are scared of her. To her surprise, instead of agreeing with the accusation, Helena calmly assures her they are not scared of anyone. Helena's bold claim makes it hard not to question why Lumon is not afraid of anyone and what the company is capable of doing to those who threaten to harm its reputation.
Helena Is Warning Cobel That Lumon's Power Makes It Easy To Deal With Their Enemies
She Knows What Lumon Is Capable Of Doing To Those Who Try To Hurt The Company
When Helena assures Cobel that they fear no one, she tries to remind her of what Lumon is capable of doing to those who walk down the path of defiance and rebellion. Although many things about the biotechnology company remain unknown, Severance has established that Lumon is a massive conglomerate that has been around since 1865. Over time, the company has spread its roots into many fields, including biotech, medicine, cosmetics, and much more. With so much influence and power in many industries, Lumon could easily take down threats like Cobel if it had to.
Cobel seemingly gets carried away when she claims they fear her because she hates how they eradicated her from the company even though she loyally served them for years. However, given how she was associated with Lumon for quite some time, she, too, probably understands that she may not be able to cause any harm to the company. As Kier Eagen's descendant, Helena seems aware of the extreme provisions the company has taken to get its enemies out of the way, explaining why she remains unaffected by Cobel's threats and reminds her she cannot do anything to them.
Cobel's Job Offer Is Just Another Way For Lumon To Try To Control Her
They Seem To Care Little About Her Loyalty
Cobel shows immense loyalty to Lumon and even worships Kier Eagan. However, the company's authorities do not seem to think twice before removing her from her position in Severance season 1's ending arc. This establishes that Helena does not offer her a new position at the company because she holds her in high esteem. Helena knows that as much as Cobel likes to believe that no one can replace her at Lumon, the company will keep moving forward even without her.
...Helena's offer to Cobel is more strategic than sincere...
However, Helena still considers offering her a new position to regain some semblance of control over her. The job offer is a kinder and more blanketed way for the company to ensure they have their eyes on Cobel and keep her in their purview. Put simply, Helena's offer to Cobel is more strategic than sincere — it only keeps Cobel in check and prevents her from becoming a loose cannon.
Cobel Is Still Right About Being A Huge Danger To Lumon In Severance Season 2
Cobel Knows Things The MDR Workers Do Not
Even though Lumon is powerful enough to easily take down an individual like Cobel, Cobel could be a genuine threat if she decides to turn against them and sets out to expose what she knows about the company's inner workings. Like most Lumon employees, she, too, seems unaware of the grand purpose behind Lumon's work. However, she knows the truth about Mark's wife, Gemma, and also seems to understand how Lumon managed to have her as an employee even after she is believed to be dead in the outside world.

If Cobel takes it upon herself to assist Mark's outie, she could help him unlock a Pandora’s box of secrets that would be devastating to Lumon. Only time will tell whether Cobel will accept Helena's offer and agree to return as a member of the Severance Advisory Council. However, as Severance season 2's episode 2 suggests, she is growing increasingly resentful towards the company and will likely not consider Helena's offer unless she gets to be the severed floor's manager again.
