What Connie Britton Has Done Since Leaving 9-1-1

The original 9-1-1 cast featured many big names, including Connie Britton as Abby Clark, who promptly left the series following the season 1 finale and moved on to other projects. Before joining the 9-1-1 cast, Britton was most known for her award-winning role as Tami Taylor in Friday Night Lights, which is considered by many to be one of the best TV shows of all time. However, Britton is also recognized for starring in Spin City, American Horror Story season 1, and Nashville. So, it's easy to see why her casting in 9-1-1 was exciting.

Connie Britton was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards before joining the cast of 9-1-1 season 1 — two for her performance in Friday Night Lights, one for American Horror Story, and one for Nashville.

Britton's Abby was a 911 operator in the first season of the Fox procedural drama series (9-1-1 would later move to ABC after season 6). She appeared in all 10 episodes, during which viewers learned she was her mother's caretaker, and she would later start dating rookie firefighter Evan "Buck" Buckley. Unfortunately, Abby's mother died at the end of 9-1-1 season 1. Her death prompted Abby to want to make a change in her life. So, Britton's character packed up her things and left Los Angeles to travel to Ireland, resulting in Abby and Buck's breakup.

According to co-creator Ryan Murphy (per Deadline), Connie Britton exited 9-1-1 after one season because of her contract. She initially signed on to only star in the first season's 10 episodes, and the actress never renewed her contract to appear in more. Britton and Murphy compromised on a one-year deal ahead of production because she was just coming off of doing another successful TV show, Nashville. So, the cast and crew knew before filming even began that they would only have Britton for one season.

Murphy and Britton were never able to work out a permanent return for Abby in 9-1-1 after season 1. However, Britton did reprise her role as Abby for a couple of episodes in season 3. Abby came to Los Angeles to tell Buck about her new fiancé, Sam Egan, during the two-part season 3 finale. Unfortunately, for her, she was on a train when it derailed, and the 9-1-1 characters responded to the emergency. After everyone was safe and sound, Abby and Buck had a heart-to-heart, allowing them to move on.

Britton was cast in season 1 of HBO's The White Lotus in 2021. The black comedy drama anthology series was a hit among critics and audiences alike, resulting in Britton's fifth Emmy nomination, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The actress has since starred in a variety of films and TV series, keeping her schedule full for the foreseeable future.

Can Connie Britton's Abby Still Return In 9-1-1?

Abby Is Still Alive

Even though Abby is alive and well in the 9-1-1 universe, Connie Britton's return to the procedural drama is unlikely. Britton is quite busy, and her character's story has closure following the season 3 finale. The ABC show has moved on from Abby, and Britton has moved on from the series. Plus, 9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear told Deadline that he believes Abby's story is "closed" after her last conversation with Buck. Of course, the door remains open for Britton to appear in 9-1-1 as Abby once more, but fans shouldn't be holding their breaths for her return.
