What Core Stats Are In Hyper Light Breaker (& What They Do)
Each character in Hyper Light Breakerhas different stat values, making them more uniquely suited to different builds and playstyles, but what does each stat mean? Some, like Armor, are obvious; the more armor a character has, the greater intrinsic damage resistance they have. Others, like OPS, are significantly confusing, and there are currently no explanations given in-game as to what they do.
To see a character's stats in Breaker, hit "Esc" in the Outpost to open up the loadout menu. Here, players can see all the gear they have equipped and change their loadout, including their SyCom, which is where their stats are located. Rather than a player's stats being tied to the character they're playing, the base stats are tied to each character's SyCom, which also includes a unique passive ability.
What Are Core Stats?
The Base Of Any Build, Making Characters Unique
As mentioned, there are nine Core Stats in Hyper Light Breaker, and they each influence something different about the character and how they play. The nine core stats, and their effects, are as follows:
Stat | Effect |
---|---|
HP | Determines the amount of HP, before any armor or Holobyte bonuses. |
BATT | Determines the amount of Battery a character can hold in their Rail. |
ARMOR | Determines the amount of damage resistance a character has, before armor or Holobyte bonuses. |
STRIKE | Determines how much damage a character can do with a Blade, before weapon, armor, or Holobyte bonuses. |
BLAST | Determines how much damage a character can do with a Rail, before weapon, armor, or Holobyte bonuses. |
STAM | Determines how many dashes a character has. |
CRIT CHANCE % | Determines the odds of a critical hit, before weapon, armor, or Holobyte bonuses. |
CRIT DMG % | Determines what percentage of base damage will be done whenever a critical hit is made, before weapon, armor, or Holobyte bonuses. |
OPS | Determines the rarity and level of gear dropped, and influences weapon damage. |
To any video game enjoyer, most of these stats are going to make sense. Strike and Blast are a bit confusing, but once players get into the game, they become fairly obvious pretty quickly. The only stat that doesn't make sense, even after a bit of playing, is the mysterious OPS.
It's best to look for Holobytes that suit whichever SyCom a chosen character has equipped. Use their base stats to determine what types of builds to create.
OPS, as stated by devs in the official Hyper Light Breaker Discord, stands for "Odds Per Stuff," and influences any chance-related event in the game. In terms of gear, this means that players with a higher OPS will have a better chance of getting rarer and/or higher level gear. For damage, this means that players with a higher OPS will have more of a chance for their weapon to deal damage on the higher end of that weapon's range.
Every weapon in Breaker does a range of damage rather than just a flat number. The higher a character's OPS is, the more likely they are to deal more damage within that range. While this is still not a guarantee of higher overall damage, OPS still seems to make players just a bit luckier.
At the moment, it's unclear as to how exactly OPS is calculated on the back end, as it's not represented by a percentage chance like Crit Chance is. As it's just a normal integer, it could be similar to Risk of Rain 2's"57 Leaf Clover" situation, where chance-related events are re-rolled a number of times equal to a character's OPS. However, there's no confirmation of this theory, so for now, players will just have to trust that OPS equals luck.
What Do Core Stats Do?
Influencing Build And Playstyle
Core stats do exactly what they sound like they do; they make up the foundations of a character and their playstyle. For instance, most of Goro's stats spike in such a way that makes him suited to high-crit, Rail-based gameplay. Vermillion, on the other hand, is equally suited to Rail builds and tankier builds, depending on which SyCom is equipped.
In general, these base stats should give players an idea of which Holobytes to look out for as they play. While stats don't make it impossible to build outside a character's niche, it makes the most sense to work with the SyCom's strengths rather than against them. Any character can be played in any manner, but core stats help determine how natural that will be.
Additionally, these core stats can be upgraded to a certain extent, allowing characters to permanently get stronger and more useful. However, the number of times each stat can be upgraded depends on both the character and SyCom. Lapis' Warrior SyCom has more upgrade capacity than any other SyCom, making her an excellent choice for those looking for a universally powerful fighter to get them through Hyper Light Breaker's hardest fights.
