After Squid Game season 2’s abrupt cliffhanger ending, questions linger about what happened to Gi-hun and how that will impact the story going into season 3. The penultimate season of the K-drama Squid Game released in December 2024, setting high expectations for the final season. The show set up many storylines that will continue into Squid Game season 3, and one of the biggest questions left at the end of Squid Game season 2 is Gi-hun’s fate.
Gi-Hun’s plan to overtake the people running the game fails, with the masked men killing nearly every player that rioted. The final moments before the credits show the Front Man shooting Jung-bae in front of Gi-Hun as a power move. What’s unclear about the ending is whether the main character will get murdered next. The Front Man Could Force Gi-Hun To Continue Playing The Games In Squid Game Season 3
A new photo from Squid Game season 3 reveals that Gi-hun is alive and handcuffed by the wrist to what looks like the bottom of one of the bunk beds. There’s no context surrounding the image, so fans are left to speculate about why he’s chained up.
It’s possible the Front Man is going to keep him in handcuffs in between the games, forcing him to continue playing. However, that could backfire because there’s no way to guarantee his compliance in the games. The fear of dying seems to have little effect on Gi-hun throughout Squid Game season 2, so there’s no reason to believe it would impact him in season 3.
The creator of Squid Game has confirmed that he would be open to a spinoff TV show focusing on the Front Man or the Recruitor.
Alternatively, it seems in character that the Front Man would handcuff Gi-hun and force him to watch the other players die during the games. The mental torture would crush any of Gi-hun’s remaining hope that the games could ever end. The Front Man's Decision To Keep Gi-Hun Alive Could Have A Sinister Motivation
Two prominent ways exist to interpret the Front Man, Hwang In-ho, keeping Gi-hun alive at the end of Squid Game season 2. The hopeful interpretation is that Hwang In-ho developed a real connection with Gi-hun, making it harder to kill him off. This feeds into the theory that The Front Man could have a redemption arc.
However, the more likely interpretation is that he wants to prolong the mental torture after killing off Jung-bae. Other than sparing Gi-hun’s life, there’s no reason to believe that The Front Man had a change of heart about his role in the games in Squid Game.
