What Was Gio Smuggling In Dexter: Original Sin?
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 8.Gio Martino (Isaac Gonzalez Rossi) was smuggling something in Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 8, but the Dexter prequel didn't make it clear what type of crime he was involved in. Dexter: Original Sin episode 8 had a bombshell revelation about one of the serial killers Harry Morgan (Christian Slater) was chasing, some major developments in Deb (Molly Brown) and Dexter's (Patrick Gibson) relationship, and the beginning of the end of Laura Moser's (Brittany Allen) story. Since the entire cast of Original Sin had some major story going on, Gio's might have flown under the radar.
Gio took Deb to Bimini, in the Bahamas, on a "business" trip. Deb quickly found out, however, that Gio's idea of business involved smuggling something in his boat. Given how angry Gio got at Deb - he stranded her in Bimini without a boat or passport to get home - it's safe to assume whatever he was smuggling was highly illegal, and he didn't want Deb to tell the police about it. Original Sin didn't explain exactly what Gio was smuggling, however, and only showed some nondescript metal boxes hidden in his boat. Luckily, it's fairly easy to infer what Gio was smuggling.
Gio Is Likely Smuggling Drugs In Dexter: Original Sin
Gio's Lavish Lifestyle & Access To Drugs Suggests He Was A Smuggler For A Cartel
It's impossible to tell definitively what Gio was smuggling in Original Sin, but it's safe to assume that Gio was smuggling drugs. Throughout the show, Gio has been shown to live a lavish lifestyle that was probably funded through crime. He lived in a beautiful beachfront apartment, could afford a boat and several weekday pleasure cruises, and even a diamond bracelet for Deb, all without having a clearly defined job. Gio also had access to cocaine, which he let Deb try, which alone isn't much, but does add to the evidence that he was funding his luxurious life with drug money.
Original Sin season 1 has also had a major focus on cartels and drug-related crime, which could be another piece of evidence suggesting Gio was involved in the drug trade. Almost everything in the show, from Laura Moser's investigation into Hector Estrada to Captain Spencer's (Patrick Dempsey) targeting of the Los Tigres cartel, has revolved around drugs. If Gio was smuggling drugs, it would fit perfectly into Original Sin's larger focus on cartels and the drug trade. It may even be a way for Gio to serve as Dexter's chance to investigate the cartels on his own as he searches for more proof of Spencer's guilt.
Is Gio Connected To Dexter Season 3's Ethan Turner?
Despite Both Going To Bimini, Gio & Ethan Turner Probably Aren't Connected
Curiously enough, Original Sin episode 8 isn't the first time Dexter has gone to Bimini. In Dexter season 3, episode 5, Dexter hunts Ethan Turner (Larry Sullivan), to Bimini as well. Ethan had murdered two of his wives - one while on a cruise ship in international waters - and Dexter decided to kill him while on another cruise through the Bahamas. Despite their shared connection to Bimini, it doesn't seem like Ethan Turner has any connection to Gio Martino, as Ethan was only there on a cruise and not connected to any type of smuggling operation.

There is, however, another connection between Original Sin and Dexter that doesn't concern Gio. Miguel Prado made a surprise cameo appearance in Original Sin episode 8, and he was also the person who convinced Dexter to kill Ethan Turner in Dexter. It doesn't seem like a coincidence that both of the episodes that saw Dexter travel to Bimini at least featured Miguel Prado, so there could be some hidden connection the franchise has yet to reveal. For now, however, Dexter: Original Sin's use of Bimini seems like a simple reference to the original show.
