Where Was American Primeval Filmed? All Locations Explained

Netflix's American Primeval has finally been released, and here are all of the filming locations that have been revealed so far. Netflix's new Western drama miniseries tells the story of a woman and her son who are attempting to cross the frontier, with much of the show taking place in the Utah Territory in 1857. Because of this setting, American Primeval uses a lot of wilderness and fort settings, so here is what real-world locations were featured in the show.

American Primeval is a dark and gritty Western series from director Peter Berg and The Revenant writer Mark L. Smith, with it featuring many of the types of locations that have become associated with the genre. Wagon trains, Mormon armies, Indigenous camps, and wild animals make up the world of American Primeval, with the production design of the series perfectly pulling off the Old West setting. However, much of the show's atmosphere is thanks to the wilderness in which it is shot, highlighting the dangers of the frontier.

Netflix Studios, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Various Locations

One of the main locations in which American Primeval was filmed is at Netflix Albuquerque Studios. The film studio which is located in Albuquerque's Mesa del Sol development, was originally named ABQ Studios, with it being used for shows like Breaking Bad. However, Netflix acquired the studio in 2018, with it featuring twelve sound stages, offices, a backlot and more. Besides American Primeval, other projects filmed at the studio include The Avengers, The Lone Ranger, Independence Day: Resurgance, Logan, Stranger Things, Trigger Warning and more.

Although it hasn't yet been revealed what specific scenes of American Primeval were shot at Netflix Albuquerque Studios, it makes sense that a large chunk of the Netflix miniseries would have been shot on Netflix's property. It is likely that American Primeval's few indoor scenes were shot on the soundstages, with various other outdoor scenes making use of the studio and the surrounding areas.

Bonanza Creek Ranch, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Various Locations

The Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch is an iconic location that has been featured in all kinds of Western movies, with American Primeval being the latest project to be added to the list. Although the area started as a mining town in 1880, it was converted into a movie ranch during the late 1940s and early 1950s, with it containing a meticulous recreation of an Old West town. Classic Western movies like Silverado, A Million Ways to Die in the West, Django Unchained, Rust, and more have utilized the location.

Many of the buildings and town areas seen throughout American Primeval are from the Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch, although the specific ones aren't known. However, it makes sense that American Primeval would use this iconic Western location in order to flesh out its world.
