Why Dune Part 2 Intentionally Made One Character Humorous Explained By Denis Villeneuve

Dune Part 2 director Denis Villeneuve reveals that one character was given more moments of levity to strike a better tonal balance to the rise of Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides. The 2024 sequel to Villeneuve's adaptation of Frank Herbert's influential sci-fi novel series saw the exiled Paul Atreides rise against the houses who wronged him alongside the people of Arrakis. Alongside Chalamet, DunePart2 starred Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken.

When reflecting on DunePart2 with TheWrap, Villeneuve recalled how one returning character was intentionally given far more comedic and lighthearted moments in the sequel. The director highlighted that with the sequel taking Paul's tale down a darker path, he wanted audiences to emphasize Javier Bardem's Stilgar and his perspective on the rapidly changing world of Arrakis. As such, he gave the character more lighthearted moments to endear him to viewers:

I’ve been talking about this movie for a year, and it’s true that not a lot of people mentioned that. The story is pretty dark, and it was important for me that the audience love Stilgar (Javier Bardem) — that they have empathy and they will want to get familiar [with] and embrace that character’s point of view. Not embrace, maybe, but get closer to him. In order to increase the empathy for this character, one way is humor, feeling that he has a candor that brings liberty.

For Villeneuve, Stilgar was the best choice as much of the humor could be derived naturally from Javier's portrayal and the culture shock Atreides faces in their bond. Check out Villeneuve's explanation below:

It’s something that Javier beautifully embodied. What is nice is to see the balance between Stilgar’s candor and the way Paul Atreides, played by Timothée, perceives Stilgar as strange. It’s about culture shock, which I think is always a good territory for humor.

The Character's Likability Adds Bittersweet Tragedy To His Fate

While Villeneuve has not previously discussed this matter during the original press, it is hard to deny that audiences grew attached to Stilgar. His passionate declarations of "Lisan-al-Gaib," even with his delayed response following Paul and Feyd Rautha's (Butler) duel in the Dune Part 2's climax, saw him become a meme representing amazement and awe online following the movie's release.

While Stilgar may have added levity, Villeneuve's intentions do add a tragic layer to his tale. Audiences are given greater opportunities to enjoy and even empathize with him, though his undying faith will ultimately see him as one of Atreides' most loyal followers, as his newfound power sets him on a path of tyranny. No matter how much audiences may have been endeared to Stilgar, they will now be witnessing the character do terrible things as he descends into zealotry, further muddying the world of Dune.

The Character's Comedic Beats Didn't Feel Too Jarring To Viewers

Though Stilgar may have upped the levity in Dune Part 2, it is clear that great care was taken during the creative process. Rather than making the character stand out with specific lines, Villeneuve relied on what had already been established about the character to add humor, creating a character and movie that is tonally consistent with what came before.

However, with Stilgar succumbing to zealotry, many may wonder if Villeneuve will employ a similar strategy when he begins to adapt Dune: Messiah. With Dune Part 2 having laid the foundations for Paul's reign, the third installment may be too focused on bringing his tale to a close. Nevertheless, we will have to wait and see when the movie releases in the foreseeable future.
