Why Moira Is "The Glue To Bring [June's] Family Back Together" In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Explained By Samira Wiley

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episodes 1-4.Samira Wiley, who plays Moira in The Handmaid's Tale, explains why her character is key to bringing June's family together in the sixth and final season. The three-episode premiere sees June briefly reunited with her mother in Alaska after Luke was arrested at the train station, while Serena works to reform Gilead. However, the joy of a reunion at the Mayday stronghold didn't last very long before Moira and Luke were ready to head toward the Jezebels in The Handmaid's Tale season 6 episode 4.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Wiley talked about how Moira is the "glue" that reunites June and her family. The actor shared that bringing everyone back together is Moira's "driving force," which has never changed, and with Moira and June having a strong friendship and her and Luke having a "brother-sister bond," Moira sees it as her duty to safeguard them. Read her comments below:

I think that her driving force is still the same, which is being able to bring everyone back together. There's a relationship that Moira and June have that sort of transcends friendship. It's almost written in the [stars]. I feel like they've been together in past lives almost. And she and Luke also have this real brother-sister bond.

Honestly, somebody on set was like, "Yeah, you're doing a scene with your brother today." And I was like, "No, he's not my actual brother..." But I think Nicole, Hannah, June, and Luke are Moira's family in a way that blood can never be. Given the fact that they are even more split up now, with Luke being arrested, it's even more dire now that she brings them back together. She's the glue to bring her family back together.

What Wiley's Comments Mean For The Handmaid's Tale Season 6

Moira Has A Bond With Both June And Luke

In The Handmaid's Tale season 6 premiere, June entered No Man's Land to bring Moira and Luke safely to the Mayday base after a mission gone wrong. It may seem that June is the person who reunited her family at this time, but episode 4 shows that there's a disconnection between Luke and June about what they are willing to sacrifice and do to save Hannah, which puts them at odds with each other.

Moira and Luke have built the Mayday resistance together from the ground up, while Moira and June went through Gilead together as best friends before they were separated. In the latest episode, Moira is determined to be the one doing the dry run to Jezebel's despite still being traumatized by the place. Willey's comment highlights Moira's motives as someone who's willing to sacrifice for others.

June may have signed up for the dangerous Mayday mission that will take place at Jezebel's, but episode 4 sees her giving Luke the pep talk, warning him that they may not make it to Hannah even if they try their hardest. Luke is ready to sacrifice his life to save his family in The Handmaid's Tale season 6, and June is in the same place, but Moira is someone who is going to fight the hardest for all of them, and this makes her "the glue."

Going to Jezebel's is not only dangerous and triggering, but it also could mean that Moira might not make it back alive, and she's willing to risk everything for the people she sees as her family. The Handmaid's Tale's cliffhanger ending has been teased by producers, but things could get darker for Moira well before that. Even if she survives the Jezebel's mission, it seems things are only going to get more intense for her going forward.
