Why Morgan Freeman Was Wearing A Glove On One Hand At The Oscars

Oscar winner Morgan Freeman wore a notable glove on one hand while delivering the introduction to the "In Memorium" segment at the 97th Academy Awards. Freeman paid tribute to his late friend and fellow Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, who was suspiciously found dead in his home, along with his wife and dog, just days before the 2025 Oscars. The "In Memorium" segment paid tribute to many late fallen screen legends, such as James Earl Jones, David Lynch, Maggie Smith, and Donald Sutherland.

Although Freeman wasn't in the running for any of the awards at the 2025 Oscars, he was present due to his longtime friendship with Hackman, which he was clearly still dealing with on Oscars night. The "In Memoriam" segment was interestingly backdropped by Mozart's Lacrimosa, which sparked a wave of confusion among viewers who took their comments to social media. Catch up on all of Screen Rant's Oscars coverage and check out the complete list of 2025 Oscars winners.

Morgan Freeman wears a glove on his left hand because of a car accident in 2008 that caused severe nerve damage. The damage from the car accident was so significant that it actually paralyzed his hand after the "jaws of life" were used to rescue Freeman from the vehicle. The accident took place in Mississippi where Freeman allegedly flipped over the car he was driving, which was a 1997 Nissan Maxima that the passenger, Demarius Meyer, owned at the time of the crash.

Other reports, such as Newsweek, state that Freeman also had a pacemaker implanted after he "passed out" while driving the car. Doctors concluded that Freeman had "potentially had experienced an atrial fibrillation (AFib)." A settlement was reached between Freeman and Meyers after the latter sued Freeman for negligence.

The glove choice is not simply part of Freeman's attire and it is typically a compression glove used to stimulate blood flow in his paralyzed left hand. Because of the permanence of Freeman's nerve damage and hand injury, he will almost certainly be sporting similar gloves in future appearances and potentially in future roles following the 2025 Oscars.
