In March 2013, My Chemical Romance broke many hearts when they announced the band had come to an end. After 12 years together, they shared the news on their website, reflected on their time as a team, and also expressed their gratitude to their fans. For millions of people, MCR had become family. Their musichad taken fans through some of the darkest and most difficult phases of their lives. Therefore, their breakup raised questions as to why they'd split at the height of their careers. Speaking to The Guardian, the band's frontman, Gerald Wat, revealed their rationale, stating:
"It wasn't fun to make stuff anymore."
A year later, Way spoke to Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, stating that the breakup was no one's fault.
"I think we're all pretty upset. It wasn't an easy thing to come to. It was sad, because it wasn't a situation where anybody hated each other. It was nobody's fault. You should always be doing new things and changing and growing as a human being."
One definitive reason was that the band members, including Gerald, Frank Iero, and Ray Toro, had kids and were at an age where being home with their children was a priority. Around the same time, Mikey Way was going through a divorce. So, all these factors could have played a role in the band's breakup. Additionally, the success of The Black Parade, their third studio album, was also a bittersweet moment for the band. Everyone had an opinion on what the band should do next, which made it difficult for them to know which direction to take.
The album became a benchmark against which all their work was judged. For instance, 2010's Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys didn't achieve the same level of success as other albums. While their post-apocalyptic gang concept was fun, the music itself felt underwhelming, and the lyrics didn't resonate as strongly as they'd have expected. Apart from standout tracks like The Kids From Yesterday and Destroya, much of the album wasn't interesting to listen to.

After a six-and-a-half hiatus, MCR made a triumphant return in 2019. News of their reunion sent the internet into a frenzy, especially after the band set up their Instagram account for the first time on October 31, 2019. They added cryptic messages such as "courage," "sacrifice" and "devotion."
My Chemical Romance announced they'd play their first gig since the split in December 2019. While speaking to Kerrang!, Geoff Rickly, who served as a guest member for MCR's "This Is the Best Day Ever" from 2002's I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love album said he'd spoken to Gerard Way about the reunion. According to him, Way had stated that their reunion was happening at the right time:
"I don’t know if it would have happened if it wasn’t now."
Rickly further said he was proud of MCR for trying it. While My Chemical Romance hasn't released a new album since they got back together, they did release "The Foundations of Decay" on May 12, 2022. However, the rock band announced a series of 2025 shows where they will be performingThe Black Parade in full. The tour starts on July 11, 2025, in Seattle.
