This 30-mile shuttle hike begins and ends in lush gorges that, in early summer, are awash with blooming wildflowers. The rugged middle section takes a high-elevation path along the precipitous eastern flank of the Santa Rosa Range, with far-ranging views of the Great Basin throughout. Campsites are scarce, and at times the trail is faint, but if you’re equipped with a good map and routefinding skills, this hike delivers with trout filled streams, alpine views, and plenty of solitude. Climb from Rebel Canyon, then follow the Summit Trail as it arcs around Santa Rosa Peak to begin a high traverse along the Santa Rosa’s southern section. You’ll cross the heads of several basins before topping a final crest for your descent into Buffalo Canyon. Along the way, look for bighorn sheep on the cliffs, and golden eagles wheeling overhead.
