Wolverine and Kitty Pryde Is Coming to Marvel With One of Comics' Most Beloved Writers

The legendary Chris Claremont, known for his 16-year run on the X-Men that started with Uncanny X-Men (1975) #94, is returning to one of his most beloved stories, as Marvel announces a new Wolverine and Kitty Pryde limited series. Set between the Wolverine and Shadowcat's defeat of Ogun and their return to the Xavier Institute, this new 5-issue run will fill in some major gaps.

Since Claremont departed from the X-Men in 1991 the iconic comics writer has returned several times to Marvel Comics, like his 2004 X-Men Reload relaunch, his 2022 Gambit limited series, and various one-shots throughout the years.

Wolverine and Kitty Pryde, a reversal of Claremont's original 1984 Kitty Pryde and Wolverine limited series, will feature art from the talented Damian Couceiro, with Marvel's announcement of the series also revealing gorgeous variant covers for the first issue from Rickie Yagawa, Marcus To, and Adi Granov.

When Kitty Pryde nearly lost her soul to Ogun during her journey to Japan, Logan was there to keep the youngest X-Man on the path to good. But as a mysterious force threatens their lives while staying with Mariko Yashida, it’s going to take all of their combined mutant, ninja and fighting skills to protect those they love!

An all-new adventure that at last tells the full story of the duo’s journey in Japan before returning to the X-Men and the heartbreak, trials and tribulations that made the characters who they are today.

Claremont's New Limited Series Will Take Readers Back To Japan

What happened between Ogun's defeat and the heroes' return?

When Kitty Pryde first traveled to Japan in 1984 as a brash young teenager, she was still seen as the innocent child that the X-Men brought along on missions... but Kitty Pryde and Wolverine would change her character arc forever. Originally attempting to save her father from the yakuza, Kitty got wrapped up in a conflict with the demonic ninja master called Ogun, who brainwashed the teenager and attempted to make her murder Wolverine. Thankfully, Wolverine and Yukio were able to break Ogun's brainwashing, but not until Kitty was properly traumatized, galvanized, and trained in deadly ninja skills.

This adventure with Wolverine and Kitty, which ended with them developing a sibling-like relationship, was in many ways the start of Logan's history of mentoring powerful young mutant women, a core part of his identity in modern times. When Kitty returned to the X-Men after her adventure in Japan she was a changed woman, having very much experienced an intense "coming-of-age" crisis. Claremont's new Wolverine and Kitty Pryde series will see Logan and Kitty battling new enemies, alongside longtime Wolverine ally Mariko Yashida, as the legendary writer fills in some gaps that reveal exactly why Pryde returned to the X-Men so differently.

Wolverine And Kitty Pryde Will Have Plenty Of Surprise Cameos

Chris Claremont loves a cameo, and he really loves doing deep cuts into X-Men lore to pull surprise guests in his comics, so truly who knows who may appear in the pages of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde. Claremont could bring a wide range of special cameos into the limited series, from Japanese hero Sunfire to the mystical group of villainous ninjas known as the Hand. Plus, Marvel editor Mark Basso promises that the series will answer the question of, "What happened to Carmen Pryde?" after he turned himself into the police!

Get ready for nostalgia, ninjas, and and teenage crises, as Chris Claremont returns to the world of the X-Men to play with Wolverine and Kitty Pryde once again.
