Wonder Woman Reveals the Real Backstory Behind Her New Lasso: "Built With Love and Pain"
WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #4!Absolute Wonder Woman has reimagined the Amazon Princess’s most iconic pieces of lore with epic twists. And while readers were already introduced to the Absolute Universe’s version of Diana’s Lasso of Truth—the Nemesis Lasso—DC has just unveiled even more captivating lore about this powerful weapon. These new revelations elevate the Nemesis Lasso to an entirely new level, making it more powerful, intriguing, and intricately connected to Wonder Woman’s character than ever before.
... it directly ties the lasso’s capabilities to the essence of Wonder Woman’s character—her transformative nature.
Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman’s Absolute Wonder Woman #4 continues Diana’s heroic journey as she battles the monstrous Tetracide. While the issue is packed with intense action and highlights Wonder Woman’s defining traits of compassion, hope, and unyielding tenacity, it also takes a compelling detour.
Through a revealing flashback involving Diana’s mother, Circe, the comic expands on key elements of Wonder Woman’s lore. Among the most intriguing revelations is a deeper exploration of the Nemesis Lasso, previously shown to judge its captive’s sins and inflict pain proportional to the harm they’ve caused.
DC Unveils New Lore About Wonder Woman's Nemesis Lasso
Comic Panel Comes From Absolute Wonder Woman #4 (2025)
The flashback featuring Diana’s mother, Circe, reveals a pivotal encounter with the goddess Hecate, who informs Circe that young Diana has a great destiny ahead—and that Circe herself will play a key role in helping her achieve it. After this revelation, Circe’s internal dialogue reveals she began receiving sporadic visions of Diana’s future, featuring her immense impact on the world, the suffering she would endure, and her unwavering perseverance. Inspired by these visions, Circe set out to craft Diana’s first lasso, describing it as being “built with love and pain. Magic and fire,” and naming it θυεία, meaning “sacrifice.”
Circe’s reference to this being Diana’s “first lasso” implies that there are other lassos, thus begging the question of whether θυεία is distinct from the Nemesis Lasso. However, as the Nemesis Lasso is the only lasso currently in Diana’s arsenal, it’s reasonable to assume that θυεία and the Nemesis Lasso are one and the same until proven otherwise. This revelation adds a thrilling new layer to Absolute Wonder Woman’s lore surrounding Diana’s iconic weapon. Yet, it’s what Circe says next that further cements the lasso’s profound connection to Diana’s character.
Wonder Woman’s New Lasso Is an Epic Reflection of Her Character

Circe continues describing the lasso known as θυεία, stating, “Like Diana’s love, it would be transformative.” This line is particularly poignant as it directly ties the lasso’s capabilities to the essence of Wonder Woman’s character—her transformative nature. While 'transformative abilities' is meant metaphorically rather than literally, the connection remains clear: both Diana and her lasso are centered around their ability to cause change, making it a perfectly fitting weapon for the Amazon hero. Additionally, the lasso’s alternate name, “sacrifice,” aligns seamlessly with Diana’s core identity in the Absolute Wonder Woman universe (as seen when she sacrificed her warrior’s arm to save Steve Trevor from Hell).
