Wonder Woman's Romance With Steve Trevor Peaks With One Heartbreaking Moment

Tom King shattered the hearts of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor shippers when he killed off Diana Prince’s most iconic love interest in Wonder Woman #14. However, King doesn’t seem to be done piling on the heartbreak for this legendary couple, as shown in the most recent Wonder Woman issue release.
Tom King and Daniel Sampere’sWonder Woman #17 continues its dual storytelling, alternating between Diana and the newborn Lizzie, and the Wonder Girls—Donna Troy, Yara Flor, and Cassie Sandsmark—who are facing off against the Sovereign.
While the Wonder Girls' side of the story is packed with action and majorly kickass moments, the calmer, more melancholic half focusing on Diana and Lizzie stands out. It brings forth one of the most heartbreaking and emotionally moving moments regarding Diana and Steve since his death, and it’s sure to bring a tear to more than a few readers.

The Diana-centric portion of Wonder Woman #17 follows Diana as she tells the infant Lizzie the story of how she met Steve . While Wonder Woman fans are familiar with this tale, what makes this retelling stand out is the fact that, as Diana recounts the story, she is also sculpting a mysterious figure from a giant rock. It isn’t until the end of the issue that the subject of the sculpture is revealed—a lifelike replica of Steve Trevor, Lizzie’s father and the great love of Wonder Woman’s life.
While Diana bringing her lost love to life through art is enough to tug at the heartstrings, it’s her self-reflective dialogue, paired with the imagery, that makes this moment truly tear-jerking. As she admires her work and gazes at the face of her lost love, Diana muses, "How many times have you heard this story? You must be sick of it, dear one. I just can’t stop telling you…how lovely he was. Your father." This dialogue, combined with Diana lovingly gazing at the statue’s face while holding their child, makes for a deeply emotional and impactful moment for readers.

Although Steve has been Diana’s central love interest for decades, it’s truly remarkable how King has deepened their relationship. One common criticism of Diana and Steve’s romance is that it felt "boring" and didn't make sense—that Diana, a goddess-level hero who works with immensely powerful beings, would fall in love with a mortal like Steve. However, King has brilliantly reminded readers of why and how Diana fell for the military man, particularly in her retelling of their first meeting in Wonder Woman #19.
But King hasn’t just modernized their story—he’s elevated it. The death of Steve and the 'birth' of Diana and Steve’s daughter has pushed their relationship to new emotional heights. Despite Steve’s death, King has proven that the story of his romance with Wonder Woman is far from over. Steve died in Wonder Woman #14, yet each issue that followed has only deepened the emotional complexity of their relationship. While some may argue that the issues since then have slowed down following the major bombshell in #14, it’s clear that King is taking his time to properly explore and give the necessary attention to Diana’s grief. So, while Steve Trevor may be gone, it’s evident that his romance with Wonder Woman is far from finished, as King continues to explore their bond through Diana’s enduring love for him.
