Yellowjackets Season 3 Finally Answered What Happened To Jackie's Gold Heart Necklace

Yellowjacketsanswers what happened to the gold heart necklace that Jackie Taylor (Ella Purnell) wore in season 1. The adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) has some mementos to remember her old friend, including Jackie's Yellowjackets jersey that Callie (Sarah Desjardins) wears during Halloween. Shauna does not have Jackie's heart necklace, though, which can be seen around Jackie's neck in the episodes leading up to her death in Yellowjackets season 1's ending.

The mystery of what happened to the necklace, and where it is in Yellowjackets' present-day timeline, is amplified by the necklace's appearance in the show's opening scene. The necklace is worn by the unidentified "pit girl" who is brutally killed and then eaten in the pilot episode. As the Yellowjackets cast of characters face new challenges in season 3, the heart necklace is brought back into play, and its whereabouts in the timeline with the adult survivors are revealed.

In Yellowjackets season 3, episode 3, "Them's the Brakes," the adult Lottie Matthews (Simone Kessell) is shown to have Jackie's necklace. Lottie gives the necklace to Callie, and she wears it around her neck. When Shauna comes home and sees her daughter and Lottie cooking, dancing, and laughing in the kitchen, she notices the necklace around Callie's neck. Shauna is horrified to see Callie wearing the necklace. Callie is unclear about why her mother is reacting this way, especially as Shauna angrily asks Lottie about how she came to have the necklace.

Lottie does not explain how she obtained it, but regardless, she must have had it since the group was rescued from the wilderness. This means that Lottie has carried the necklace with her for the past 25 years without Shauna knowing. Given how little the other survivors knew about what happened to Lottie before crossing paths again with her in Yellowjackets season 2, it is unlikely that they knew what happened to the necklace either. It is a secret that Lottie has kept to herself for more than two decades.

Why Lottie Would Have Kept Jackie's Necklace, Not Shauna

Lottie Has A Different Connection To The Necklace Than Shauna Does

Before this episode, the necklace's last appearance in the chronological timeline was when it was seen being worn by Yellowjackets' pit girl. This teases that the necklace will have an important role to play in the sacrifices and cannibalistic rituals still to come. Since teenage Lottie (Courtney Eaton) is at the center of the cult-like actions among the girls, it makes sense that the necklace would fall into her hands, and that she would hold onto it for decades to come.

Even as an adult, Lottie continues to ascribe a great deal of power to the wilderness, and sees symbolic significance where others see nothing. While Yellowjackets continues to be ambiguous about whether there is any merit to these supernatural occurrences, the necklace definitely falls into this category. Lottie has ascribed the same kind of power to it that she does to other wilderness-related things, including the Queen of Hearts ritual that she insisted on performing during Yellowjackets season 2's ending. Shauna's skepticism about the power of the wilderness would have made her unworthy to have the necklace in Lottie's eyes.

Lottie Sees Something Unique In Callie

Lottie says to Shauna that Callie wearing the necklace "feels right" and that "It never meant what you thought it meant." For Shauna, the necklace is a reminder of the role she played in her best friend's death, and later on, it became involved in cannibalistic sacrifices. Lottie seems to have no interest in sacrificing Callie. In this case, it may be that Lottie sees the necklace as a sign that Callie is special, and that she has a connection to the wilderness that no one else has.

Lottie has been fascinated by Callie ever since she shot her in the season 2 finale.

Callie wants to learn about her mother's past and is frustrated by Shauna's refusal to divulge what happened. Lottie giving the necklace to Callie is a sign of trust and connection, the likes of which Callie wishes she had with her mother. Part of Lottie may believe that Callie deserves the necklace, but there is seemingly also a part of her that wants to use it as a way to forge a convenient bond with Callie. However, with Shauna snatching the necklace from Callie and forcing Lottie to leave the house, Lottie now needs to adjust her plans in Yellowjackets season 3.
