In the preview for Daredevil #20 by Saladin Ahmed, José Luis Soares Pinto, Oren Junior, Jesus Aburtov, and Clayton Cowles, Matt Murdock is back in action after a series of grueling encounters, but his old suit is in need of repairs. In the meantime, he dons a more durable look when he suits up as Daredevil.
Daredevil has officially been given a long-awaited design overhaul as he's depicted in his old black and red armor, paying homage to one of his more underrated looks from Marvel lore ahead of his upcoming battles to protect the streets of Hell's Kitchen.
Daredevil Is Finally Bringing Back His Iconic '90s Armored Costume
Daredevil Returns to His Black Suit As He Kicks Off His Next Era
Daredevil's armor first debuted in Daredevil #321 by D.G. Chichester and Scott McDaniel, and much like in the current arc, he swaps to it once his usual attire gets damaged in a fight. This costume is mostly black in a switch-up from his standard red, though it does incorporate red on his chest and arms. The armor is what makes this suit really stand out, as Daredevil receives armored gear across his body that protects him from attacks more than the majority of his simpler costumes. The over-designed quality can be a drawback, though it's admittedly handy at keeping this suit from being destroyed like the other one.

Daredevil's New Villain Proves How Gross the Hero's Powers Really Are
Daredevil’s superpowered senses are unmatched, but a new, truly disturbing villain is proving Matt Murdock's powers are actually a disgusting curse.
During the "Black Armor" era of Daredevil's history, he also faked Matt Murdock's death and changed his secret identity as part of a huge upheaval to his status quo. The response to this storyline was mixed at best, as evidenced by Daredevil reverting to his classic costume again before long, though it's still a visually striking design that should be celebrated as much as any other. The current Daredevil series is setting out to do this overlooked costume justice, shedding light on one of Marvel's forgotten periods and shaking things up for the vigilante world with a new and improved Daredevil.
Daredevil Is Finally Ready to Put a Cool Spin on an Underrated Suit
Daredevil's Armor Isn't a Fan-Favorite, But Its Comeback Could Change That
Daredevil's armor isn't his only black costume in Marvel lore, though this particular variation stands out due to the fact that it incorporates armor in a questionable move that detracts from his usual visual look. The costume came with a shift in the overall tone of his comics at the time, as Matt had to take on more physically demanding foes and push himself to new limits. The gripes, however, stem from the appearance of the armor itself. Aside from being incredibly '90s in its appearance, the infamous black armor also goes against what Daredevil represents as a hero.
Aside from being incredibly '90s in its appearance, the infamous black armor also goes against what Daredevil represents as a fighter.
Daredevil, at his core, is a fighter. Trained by martial arts master Stick, Matt Murdock is skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Moreover, he's very agile, leaping across rooftops and swinging around Hell's Kitchen using his agility. This armor, however, has a more bulky design that could limit his movement in a way that the usual fabric wouldn't. Additionally, it has a lot going on, in lieu of his usual costumes that stick to one or two colors. This one instead incorporates black, red, and silver, culminating in an overwhelming suit. With that being said, its return could salvage it with better stories and Daredevil-style action.

Daredevil's Black Costume Makes a Comeback in the Comics and MCU
As Daredevil swings into action with his black armor in the comics, the MCU also seems to be setting up a comeback for a similar costume. Set photos for Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again have shown Charlie Cox wearing a black suit, hinting at a new look that will coincide with his design update in the comics. Daredevil may be known for his classic red, but his black costumes deserve more love as well, and it's about time they received the multimedia push they need. At long last, Daredevil is ready to revive one of his coolest costumes.
Daredevil #20 will be available on April 9th, 2025 from Marvel Comics!
