You Need to See Phil Coulson's Dark Redesign in Official Marvel Lore
Phil Coulsondebuted as a character over 15 years ago in Marvel’s live-action space, with his comic counterpart recently becoming the new physical incarnation of Death thanks to the power of the latest Infinity Stone: the Thanos-created Death Stone. Already given a slight visual tweak when he was first brought back from the dead, Coulson receives an even more fine-tuned Death design in a new piece of upcoming cover art from a fan-favorite industry artist.
Debuting in 2008's Iron Man, Phil Coulson was murdered by Loki in The Avengers, then resurrected for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2013. Meanwhile, comic Coulson was introduced in 2012’s Battle Scars and died in 2015’s Secret Empire, with this Coulson recently being revived as Death’s new avatar.
In new cover art illustrated by InHyuk Lee for the upcoming The Infinity Watch #4, Coulson leans into his role as Death, getting a subtle redesign that shows off his dark power like never before while staying true to the character’s black-suited visual design.
Phil Coulson’s Power Over Death Is Front and Center in New Marvel Comics Cover
The Infinity Watch #4 Variant Cover by InHyuk Lee
Available on April 23, this Infinity Watch variant cover shows Coulson stepping from the shadowy background as he reaches out with a pitch-black hand, its wispy aura slowly rising from his outstretched fingers. Drawn with blacked-out sunglasses, his usual S.H.I.E.L.D.-approved black suit, and a skull lapel pin that essentially acts as a name tag for his new gig, InHyuk Lee encapsulates who this version of Coulson is visually and with a stone-cold expression on his face, who Coulson could become if he ever uses his abilities for any other than keeping the natural order.

Did Marvel Revive Phil Coulson to Become Peter Parker's New Mentor? A New Theory Thinks So
Marvel Comics has resurrected Phil Coulson, and in doing so, has given him a new cosmic purpose, making him the perfect new mentor for Spider-Man.
What’s cool about this piece, aside from being drawn by a seasoned artist like InHyuk Lee, who has previously illustrated covers for Marvel's Red Goblin, Marvel Zombies: Resurrection, Alien, and more, is that it hones in on what makes this Death Stone-imbued Coulson so formidable. Forced to take the reins of a cosmic entity that quite literally is the personification of The End, Coulson’s new job makes him the unavoidable eventuality for all Earth-616 beings, with this effective redesign showing how terrifying Coulson can be when he unleashes even a small amount of the dark powers Death has granted him.
Phil Coulson’s Death Redesign Is Perfect for This Fan-Favorite Character
Coulson Has Been Death for Only a Short While
Infinity Watch has a couple of issues to go before this InHyuk Lee cover hits shelves, but judging from this early sneak peek, it seems that Coulson may be leaning more into his Death persona than ever before, with the idea of him corrupted by the insidious power that now flows through him being a potential plot thread that could come to a head sooner rather than later. Phil Coulson will carry out the Grim Reaper’s duties for the time being, but don’t be surprised if he gets yet another new redesign the longer he familiarizes himself with Death’s power.
The Infinity Watch #4 will be available from Marvel Comics on April 23, 2025.
