You Season 5 Suggests Joe Goldberg Will Get The Ending He Deserves

With You season 5 serving as the show's final run of episodes, the recent teaser trailer has finally given the biggest clue yet about what will happen to Penn Badgley's Joe Goldberg. Returning to lead the You season 5 cast, Badgley will play a pivotal role in bringing the story to its conclusion. After Joe's good fortune took its luckiest turn yet at the end of You season 4, it seems as though it's all going to come crashing down around him. If not, the Netflix show may have another surprising twist in store.

Since beginning in 2018, You has become one of Netflix's biggest shows. Sadly, it's also one of several Netflix shows ending in 2025. If it's to avoid disappointment, You season 5 needs to have a finale that leaves its many viewers satisfied. However, for a complex character like Joe Goldberg, it's perhaps unclear what a satisfying ending looks like. Thankfully, a Netflix teaser has provided a subtle indication of what Joe's ultimate fate could be.

Joe Looks Like He'll Be Trapped In The Glass Cage Again In You Season 5

Badgley's character seemingly hasn't learned his lesson

Joe's glass cage is one of You's most recognizable aspects. Originally introduced as a way to preserve old books, it quickly doubled up as a holding cell for Joe's unlucky love interests. He also replicates the structure wherever he goes. As something he feels ill-prepared without, the cage also appears to be how he meets his end in You season 5. The teaser trailer shows him staring down the lens and knocking on the glass. Although he doesn't seem that concerned, the footage doesn't look like it's taken from the show, so it's likely clever marketing doing some sneaky foreshadowing.

With Joe back in New York, the cage in You season 5 could easily be the same one from the show's inaugural run.

Despite being largely utilized to imprison those who either oppose him or don't reciprocate his intense feelings, Joe has already become trapped in the cage himself on more than one occasion. Those clever or desperate enough to deceive him have been able to orchestrate a switcheroo. That being said, he's always been able to free himself again. Unfortunately for Joe, he might not be so lucky this time around.

Being Trapped And Left For Dead Is Probably What Joe Deserves In You's Final Season

It's weirdly easy to forget that Joe Goldberg is the story's bad guy

Part of what makes You so appealing is that Joe Goldberg is a strangely easy person to root for. In many other stories, Badgley's creepy character would be easily identifiable as the bad guy. However, he's quite clearly presented as a twisted protagonist in the context of the Netflix show. As a result, those watching quite often want him to get away with all his unforgivable actions. In reality, he deserves to be punished for the pain he has inflicted and the lives he has taken.

As proven by shows like Dexter, it can be tricky to find a suitable ending for characters like Joe. Having them arrested seems a little too predictable, and allowing them to escape with few repercussions also lacks the same level of closure. Killing them off can certainly be effective, but it would have to be done correctly. You has the advantage of the possibility of Joe being left for dead in the very structure he used to harm so many, so it only feels fitting that it plays a huge role in his ending.
