You Season 5 Trailer Highlights All Of Joe's Victims As He Goes Back To His Roots

A teaser trailer for the new season of You has arrived. The Netflix show, which is based on the book series of the same name by Caroline Kepnes, follows book lover Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) as he stalks various women, killing almost anyone who gets in his way, in a new location each season, moving from New York City to Los Angeles to Northern California to London. The upcoming You season 5 sees him return to New York and will conclude the long-running thriller series.

Netflix has now unveiled the official release date announcement trailer for You season 5, which includes new footage from the upcoming season. The trailer kicks off by showing Joe, having shaved his season 4 beard, strolling down the street in New York City and returning to his old haunt, Mooney's Rare & Used Books. As he walks into the store, he reminisces about the locations and love interests from previous seasons.

Joe's iconic voiceover monologue addressed to "you" returns in the trailer, which slowly reveals that, this time, he is seemingly talking to the glass cage he keeps in the store's basement, in which he has imprisoned many victims over the years. See the video below:

While the You season 4 ending already revealed that Joe would be returning to New York City in the final season, his return to Mooney's in the trailer highlights just how much he will be returning to his old stomping grounds. This is compounded by the fact that he is reminiscing about his former flames and victims, namely Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle), and Kate Galvin-Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), only two of whom are still alive.

Mooney's Books is where Joe met and later imprisoned his first victim, Beck.

However, by bringing him so close to his past, the show is also putting Joe in serious danger. There are many other You characters who are still alive and possess knowledge that could eventually bring Joe down. His return to New York City could inform key people from his past that he is still alive after faking his death, which may be a danger that is intentionally evoked by the trailer spending so much time on footage of his victims from previous seasons, including those he set free such as Cary (Travis Van Winkle) and Sherry Conrad (Shalita Grant).

Our Take On The You Season 5 Trailer

New York City Is Central To Joe's Story

Ultimately, this early teaser does not reveal very much about the storyline of You season 5, which will feature returning characters alongside an incoming cast that includes Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, and Griffin Matthews. However, the way it luxuriates in the return to the New York locations both highlights nostalgia for previous seasons and underscores how much Joe's actions in the city have influenced the past few years of his life, making it a perfect battleground for his final outing.

You season 5 premieres on Netflix on April 24.
