Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Showrunner Addresses Series' Parallels Between Spider-Man & Future Villain Tombstone

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-ManShowrunner Jeff Trammell explains why Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Lonnie Lincoln is a perfect parallel to Peter Parker in the MCU's animated Spider-Man show. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's cast of characters shakes up Peter Parker's usual allies and enemies, with the introduction of animated variants of Marvel characters such as Daredevil, Norman Osborn, and Doctor Strange himself. Instead of the traditional friend combo of Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy or Mary Jane Watson, or the MCU combo of Ned Leeds and MJ, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Peter Parker's two closest friends are Nico Minoru and Lonnie Lincoln.

In a D23 interview, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man showrunner Jeff Trammell addressed the similarities between Hudson Thames' Peter Parker and Eugene Byrd's Lonnie Lincoln. Trammell reveals that an early version of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man had "Peter and Lonnie were on completely opposite ends," but taking both characters "on similar journeys" proved more interesting for the animated show. Trammell also highlights how Peter and Lonnie care too much about what they do, though their different journeys will take them to very different fates. Read Jeff Trammell's full comments below:

“There was an early version of the show where Peter and Lonnie were on completely opposite ends. As time went on, I thought, ‘I don’t know if that’s fun. Let’s try putting Peter and Lonnie together and seeing how they complement each other.'”

“Peter and Lonnie share a lot of really cool personality traits, but they’re also very different. Being able to juxtapose those characters as we take them on similar journeys with different obstacles is something I was really interested in exploring.”

“Lonnie has so much history in the comics, but there is so much more to explore with him onscreen,” Trammell said. “That was what really drew me to him. Peter is going through growing pains, and he cares so much, and Lonnie is doing the same. Lonnie has a huge heart, and so he does what he feels is necessary given the circumstances. At the end of the day, he cares too much—to a fault. Peter is like that, too. They’re both intrinsically people who want to help but are taken on different journeys throughout the course of this show.”

Spider-Man star Hudson Thames praises Lonnie Lincoln and Peter Parker's relationship in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Thames calls it one of his favorite parts of the series. Certainly, Peter and Lonnie's story is only starting by the end of episode 10. Thames says:

“I think Peter’s relationship with Lonnie is really beautiful. It’s one of my favorite parts of the whole series, actually. I think the way that it grows and changes is really cool.”

What Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Showrunner's Comments Mean For Lonnie Lincoln

Lonnie Lincoln Is Bound To Become Tombstone In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Season 2

Peter Parker usually bears parallels to characters such as Harry Osborn, Eddie Brock, Miles Morales, and Ben Reilly, while Tombstone is usually portrayed as a rather small-time Spider-Man villain. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man makes a significant change to Spider-Man's supporting characters, and Lonnie Lincoln is among the ones who get the bigger boost. In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Marvel has given Lonnie Lincoln the most developed backstory ahead of his full Tombstone transformation.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Lonnie Lincoln is introduced as a kindhearted classmate of Peter's, but whereas Peter Parker's life gets turned upside down when he gets bitten by a spider, Lonnie's changes when he joins the 110 gang. Similarly, Peter Parker establishes himself as an independent superhero by wearing his own official costume in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's ending. Meanwhile, Lonnie Lincoln starts his villain journey once he becomes the 110 gang's leader and his body starts transforming.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man introduces a brand-new version of Spider-Man's world that hasn't been adapted similarly by any previous movie or show. Characters like Lonnie Lincoln, Pearl Pangan, and Nico Minoru had plenty of untapped potential prior to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and they wouldn't be able to have the same level of prominence in the MCU's Earth-616. Fortunately, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is giving characters like Lonnie Lincoln their long-deserved time in the spotlight.
