Ahead of Superman's Premiere, DC Comics Is Bringing Its Hero to the Comic In a Special Way

With Superman soaring into theaters this summer in the DCU's upcoming movie, DC Comics has elected to celebrate the exciting occasion with a variant cover that highlights the film's titular hero. David Corenswet's already-beloved take on Clark Kent will officially be joining the comics in time for Superman Day, with his likeness brought from screen to page via art by DC icon Dan Mora.

As part of 2025's Superman Day festivities, OVRLORD Comics on BlueSky has revealed an early look at DC's Facsimile Edition of Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman. This reprint includes a cover by superstar artist Dan Mora, which shows the Man of Steel in his signature pose from the original comic. Moreover, the Superman pictured is a pitch-perfect depiction of the movie's version, played by David Corenswet.

Dan Mora's variant cover for the Facsimile Edition of Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster references the famous cover of this classic story and re-imagines it to bring the DCU to comics. The original, brought to life by Shuster in 1938, features Superman lifting a green car over his head with his cape billowing in the wind. He then smashes the car in defiance as people around him watch on. This eye-catching imagery has since become iconic, with artists spawning countless re-creations over the years, and this latest homage stands out because of its incorporation of a film's costume.

David Corenswet's costume has been translated into comic form spectacularly by Mora for this exclusive cover. The suit's intricate detailing, such as the lines along the fabric and the shape of his boots, draws from the movie's designs with staggering accuracy. The symbol emblazoning Superman's chest stands out as the logo for the movie, which takes inspiration from Mark Waid and Alex Ross' Kingdom Come universe. Overall, Mora captures the spirit of Corenswet's portrayal of DC's greatest hero, and there may be more artwork of his Superman to come in the months ahead.

From Facsimile Editions to New Series, DC Comics Is Celebrating Superman

The premier issue of Action Comics' return to shelves is far from the only project that DC Comics has in the works as Superman's theatrical release approaches. DC has already announced plans for the "Summer of Superman", a months-long initiative that places the Man of Steel front and center in the comics. He'll be leading the new Superman Unlimited series, which will coincide with numerous other series starring his supporting cast of Super-family heroes. DC has seized the golden opportunity to promote Superman across mediums, and fans should be on the lookout for Dan Mora's gorgeous variant cover when it arrives later this year.
