American Idol: Katy Perry Breaks Silence About Carrie Underwood, Revealing How She Really Feels About Her Replacement
Former American Idol judge Katy Perry revealed that she thinks that Carrie Underwood has a lot to offer as her replacement on the reality singing competition series. For American Idol season 23, Carrie will take Katy's seat at the judging table alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, as Katy focuses on her own music career, including her latest album, 143, and her Lifetimes tour. Carrie won American Idol season 4 in 2005, and went on to become a global superstar, selling 85 million records worldwide and releasing 28 number one hits, among her many other phenomenal accomplishments.
Katy explained that Carrie was a great choice to replace her because she experienced being an American Idol contestant and winner firsthand.
In an interview with People, Katy explained that Carrie was an excellent choice to replace her because she experienced being an American Idol contestant and winner firsthand. She said, "She was born on that show. I think she knows how to steer it. She actually truly knows... what it feels like to be in their shoes. We could only metaphorically feel that as judges."
Katy went on to say that Carrie will be able to offer the newest American Idol hopefuls some good advice, if they're open to it. She stated, "As artists, we've been in some sort of their shoes, but she has lived every single day. So I think she's going to have a lot to offer anyone that's willing to listen."

What Katy Perry's Praise Of Carrie Underwood Means For American Idol
Carrie Was The Perfect Choice To Replace Katy
When Katy announced that she was leaving American Idol, it seemed that there was no one who could fill her shoes. She brought so much to the show in her seven-season run, from her expert advice to the contestants to her outrageous antics that kept everyone laughing. However, when Carrie was announced, it was clear that she was the perfect replacement for Katy. Although they have very different personalities, like Katy said, Carrie brings a completely new perspective to the judges' table as a winner of the show.
Carrie will be the only American Idol judge who has actually experienced being a contestant, from the auditions to winning the show to having a spectacular post-show career. She'll be able to offer advice to the contestants from firsthand experience, which is something that Lionel and Luke can never do. Although Luke and Lionel are incredible artists, Carrie got her start on American Idol, and that's going to make her an even better judge.
Our Take On Katy Perry's Opinion About Carrie Underwood
American Idol Should Always Have An Alum On The Judging Panel
Katy is absolutely right about Carrie and her experience as an American Idol contestant. Now that the show has finally brought on an alum as a permanent judge, it should always have someone with that kind of experience on the panel. After 22 seasons, American Idol has an entire galaxy of stars who've competed on the show who would make fantastic judges. From now on, there should always be an American Idol alum on the judging panel, whether it's Carrie or some other superstar from the show.
American Idol season 23 premieres Sunday, March 9 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

American Idol is a reality singing competition that adds to the international "Idol" brand, conceived initially in the U.K. as Pop Idol. Holding massive auditions across the U.S., American Idol invited several contestants to perform in front of a panel of judges that would determine whether or not they'd go on to future rounds for a chance at competing in the fully televised premiere of the show. Contestants are voted off each week by American participation via voting through various mediums, and the winner of the competition would be given a contract with a record label to secure a future as America's next musical idol.
