The romance genre of anime is filled with great series in all types of subgenres, and My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999 might be the best nerdy rom-com of them all. The series stands alone thanks to a strong cast of side characters, a wonderful premise, and one of the cutest and most unique relationships in anime. This March, the beloved anime is getting its own live-action movie.
The live-action movie was announced back on November 7, 2024. It's going to be produced by Kadokawa Daiei Studio, one of the bigger production companies in Japan. The director looking to lead the adaptation is Yuka Yasukawa, and the screenplay is by Anna Kawahara. Tomoka Takagi will produce the movie and the distribution arm of Kadokawa will make sure everyone has a chance to check out the film. My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999 is a unique romance series for a couple of great reasons. The story is set around the titular Yamada and his newfound love interest, Akane. Yamada helps Akane when she drinks a little too much after a hard breakup. When she starts playing the online MMORPG, Forest of Savior, she meets Yamada yet again, this time in the online world. The two are part of the same guild, and Akane can't help but be interested in the nearly emotionless Yamada.
Yamada is a professional gamer and someone who can walk Akane through the game. He also inadvertently helps her through her breakup, helping her get over her ex through both the game and real life. Their love story is a fun one to watch because it occurs both in the real world and the digital one. It's a funny, cute romance in two different settings that work equally well to tell their story.

The live-action adaptation of My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv999 has an actor playing Yamada that looks so much like the main character, it wouldn't be surprising to hear that Yamada was modeled after him. The casting director couldn't have done a better job with their choice, as their resemblance to one another is uncanny. Both the anime character and the live-action actor, Yuto Yamamoto, are tall, have relatively long necks, and wear the same expressionless face. If the movie is as good as their resemblance to one another, it's going to be a smash hit.

Even though the movie is going to be based on a screenplay by Anna Kawahara, it looks to faithfully recreate the anime that everyone has come to love. In the 60-second trailer currently available, not only are Yamada and Akane seen front and center, but some of the best and most relevant side characters to the story are included.
Characters like Eita, Runa, Kamota, Momoko, Tsubaki, and more are all seen both in the trailer and on the movie's official website. Yamada and Akane are great together, but their relationship is only made better by the people around them. Their mutual friendship with Eita, their contemptuous relationship with Runa, and Tsubaki's feelings for Yamada are all pivotal to the story, and the movie looks to leave no stone unturned when it comes out on March 28th.
