A 21-year-old man who died after a fall from Capitol Peak on Tuesday had never climbed a fourteener before, according to The Aspen Times. And officials speculate that he made the same fatal mistake as the couple who fell to their deaths last week. According to the Aspen Times story, the man and his climbing partner, Brandon Wilhelm, did not know each other well, and Wilhelm had much more experience—but an argument about the route led them to split up on the descent. A statement from the Sheriff’s office reads: “There is not an alternate route down the North Face of Capitol Peak unless you have extensive climbing experience.” Prior to this summer, four people died on Capitol between 2000 and 2016, according to the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative.
