In 1978, Arizona had just 11 breeding pairs of bald eagles. But the latest counts show that the species is continuing to do well: 82 bald eagles were born in 2017, the highest number yet, and the number of breeding pairs has climbed to 67. The eagles are no longer considered endangered, but they are still protected by federal law.
