Beloved Hack & Slash Capcom Title Is Reportedly Getting A Remake
While Capcom has been making plenty of official announcements, including a remake of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny and updates on Monster Hunter Wilds, a potential leak indicates that a remake of the first Devil May Crymight also be in the works. Originally released in 2001, Devil May Cry is largely considered to have created the hack and slash, or "character action" genre, going on to influence the development of franchises like God of War and Bayonetta, the latter of which was a later work of DMC's director, Hideki Kamiya.
A recent post by Redditor MXHombre123 indicates that a remake of Devil May Cry, along the same lines as the Resident Evil remakes, might be in development at Capcom, citing an anonymous post where the poster refers to information from an unknown "game journalist" acquaintance. While this might not be substantial on the surface, this information was also posted by Reddit user IcePopsicleDragon around the same time, with both sources saying that the Devil May Cry info was paired with a leak that EA's Need for Speed franchise would also receive news - which it recently did.

An Unverified Leak Points To A Remake Of The Original Devil May Cry
According to the leaks, the prospective Devil May Cry remake would include "Better Graphics", a "Reworked story", and a "different camera angle". News of the leak has also been paired with a statement from the voice actor for series antagonist Vergil, Daniel Southworth. Southworth said that he had "just finished a video game" at a Power Morphicon 2024 panel, as can be seen in a video posted by YouTuber Jason Naranjo, which fans have taken as soft confirmation of a new Devil May Cry game in the works.
With Capcom seemingly focusing most of its efforts on the upcoming release of Monster Hunter Wilds, any official news on Devil May Cry will likely not be released until after Wilds launches on February 28 - and, in fact, might be planned to roughly coincide with the release of the Netflix Devil May Cry series in April. Notably, Hideki Kamiya, at the newly-established studio Clovers, is already working with Capcom on an Okami sequel, lending more support to the likelihood of a DMC remake, but before any official confirmation, the leaks should still be taken with a grain of salt.

While Devil May Cry isn't Capcom's most popular and successful franchise (generally lagging behind Resident Evil and especially Monster Hunter) it is a hugely influential one, having essentially created and greatly refined the "character action" genre with the original Devil May Cryand the later Devil May Cry 3. Devil May Cry 3 and 5, in particular, are both regarded by fans as two of the best games in the entire genre, and which game is the best between them largely boils down to personal preference.
In spite of this, though, Devil May Cry as a whole is somewhat of a mixed bag - DMC2, for example, is largely regarded as a complete disaster, and while DMC4 isn't nearly as bad, it's still heavily flawed, and led to an attempted (and controversial) reboot of the series in 2013 with Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry. The original Devil May Cry, while well-regarded, is showing its age in several places - so, if the leaks are true, a remake of the game would be welcome news for most fans.
