Catherine Made Peter's Future In The Night Agent Season 3 Much More Complicated

Warning! SPOILERS about The Night Agent season 2, episode 10 ahead.

The Night Agent season 2’s ending set up the complicated direction Peter’s story will go in season 3, made all the more precarious by one of Catherine’s choices in season 2. Catherine Weaver and Peter Sutherland Jr.’s relationship has been challenging at best in The Night Agent season 2, with Peter’s case agent initially refusing to believe he was cut out to be a Night Agent after his training was accelerated following Peter’s incredible save in The Night Agent season 1’s ending. Catherine’s investigation of Peter’s father and Peter’s trust issues because of Diane Farr greatly contributed to their problems.

Peter’s choice to steal the UN investigation file for Jacob Monroe to save Rose could have been the proof Catherine needed to officially deem him not yet ready to work for Night Action, especially after that all but guaranteed Governor Hagan’s win in the presidential election. However, Peter offering up his life for Rose’s in The Night Agent season 2 meant Jacob Monroe would have virtually owned him, which came in handy for Catherine’s plan to use Peter as a double agent. One choice of Catherine’s nonetheless made Peter’s upcoming mission even more difficult than it already was.

Solomon's Death Complicates Peter's New Partnership With Jacob Monroe In The Night Agent

Monroe building Hagan’s political career effectively meant he could maneuver him into giving him White House secrets he could sell to the highest bidder when Hagan took office, making Catherine’s idea to use Peter as double agent one of the few plans possible to eventually stop Monroe. For it to work, Monroe would have to believe Peter was still part of Night Action, and because of Peter’s allegiance to it, Monroe might harbor hard feelings after Catherine killed Solomon. After all, The Night Agent season 2 repeatedly proved how Monroe’s team remembered and cared about those among them who died.

With Monroe not having any reason to doubt Night Action still trusted Peter and knowing Peter directly answered to Catherine, he may be tempted to take his anger out on him.

Monroe was visibly shaken when learning that Solomon had died, and while their line of work warranted a lot of danger, he evidently trusted and cared for his right-hand man. With Monroe not having any reason to doubt Night Action still trusted Peter and knowing Peter directly answered to Catherine, he may be tempted to take his anger out on him as Peter is the only one from the organization he actually has access to, egregiously complicating Peter’s mission to gain his trust.

Why Killing Solomon Might Pay Off For Catherine In The Night Agent

Solomon Dying Means Monroe Lacks A Right-Hand Man & Peter Could Become That

While Catherine killing Solomon in self-defense may very well make Peter’s mission an impossible one in The Night Agent season 3, it could also pave the way for Peter to take Solomon’s place in Monroe’s organization as his right-hand man. Indeed, Monroe showed he understood Peter’s value in The Night Agent season 2, episode 9, when he finally told him Rose’s location and admitted that not all sources were the same, and that Peter had truly gone “above and beyond” in his job at the UN building.

The Night Agent season 1’s incredible success confirmed the action thriller’s return for seasons 2 and 3 early on, making its future a certainty and building a cohesive story over seasons 2 and 3.

Peter’s closeness to Catherine might make him untrustworthy to Monroe initially, but her choices still freed up the position in the organization that Solomon occupied. While there may be some pushback, Peter working exceptionally for Monroe can make him rise through the ranks quickly, due to Solomon’s absence and Hagan and Monroe’s difficult relationship, as teased by Hagan’s reluctance to accept he answered to Monroe. Solomon’s death would thus be potentially very convenient for Peter in The Night Agent season 3, especially considering how time-sensitive stopping Monroe selling US state secrets would be.

The Night Agent season 2 is now streaming in its entirety on Netflix.
