Dog Man's #1 Opening Box Office Explained: Near Record For January & How It Compares To Other DreamWorks Movies

It Has Only Been Beaten By Kung Fu Panda 3

Dog Man was the king of the box office throughout weekend five of 2025, with it being the number one movie at the domestic box office. The film made $36 million in total against its $40 million budget, surpassing predictions that it would make $20-30 million in its opening weekend. This gross makes Dog Man the second biggest opening for an animated movie in January, with it only being surpassed by Kung Fu Panda 3. Kung Fu Panda 3 made $41.3 million in its opening weekend upon its release in January 2016, with it barely beating Dog Man's $36 million.

Dog Man's $36 million opening is pretty impressive, with it doing better than the studio's previous movie, The Wild Robot, which made $35.79 in its opening weekend in 2024. Dog Man also beat Trolls Band Together's $30 million, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken's $5.5 million, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's $12.43 million, The Boss Baby: Family Business's $16 million, Spirit Untamed's $6.1 million, and The Croods: A New Age's $9.724 million. The only DreamWorks movie from the 2020s to have a better opening than Dog Man is Kung Fu Panda 4, which made $57.989 million.

Companion Has A Strong Start At The Box Office To Land At #2

Making $9.5 Million In Its Opening Weekend

Dog Man wasn't the only new release in weekend five of 2025, with director Drew Hancock's Companion also making its debut. The film was projected to make $8-10 million, and it ended up making $9.5 million, with it finishing second after Dog Man. Companion had a budget of $15 million, with it making nearly two thirds of that back in just its opening weekend. This has set Companion up well to make its money back, with the horror comedy film hopefully making its money back for Warner Bros. Pictures.

On top of being a big box office contender, Companion has also gotten incredibly positive reviews. As of the writing of this article, Companion has a 93% critics score and a 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The positive word of mouth means that Companion may continue to have legs into its second weekend, with the true box office potential of Companion possible being seen in the weeks to come.

Flight Risk Barely Stays In The Top 5 One Week After Opening At #1

It Had A Drop Of Over 50%

Flight Risk entered its second weekend after making its box office debut in weekend four of 2025, and it has had a change of fate after its wide release. When Flight Risk was released on January 24, 2025, the film kicked off an impressive opening weekend. Flight Risk came in number one in weekend four, with it earning $12 million in its opening weekend. However, the film had a significant drop off in weekend five, with it earning only $5.6 million. It barely stayed in the top five after its 51.7% drop, and it will probably drop even further in weekend six.

Other Takeaways From The January 31-February 2, 2025 Weekend Box Office

Disney Holdovers Are Still Doing Well

Two Disney holdovers from 2024 are still doing strong during weekend five of 2025. Mufasa: The Lion King made an additional $6.113 million, adding to its total gross of $653 million, while Moana 2 made an additional $2.836 million, adding to its total gross of $1.036 billion. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is another big holdover from 2024, with it coming in at #6 and making an additional $3.225 million, adding to its total of $462.5 million.

In the wake of the Oscars nominations, awards season darlings A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist came in at #8 and #9 respectively. A Complete Unknown made $2.164 million while The Brutalist made $1.866 million, with the continued awards season coverage meaning that the films will probably continue to make money in the coming weeks.

One of Them Days is continuing to do well, with it coming in at #4 and making an additional $6 million. Of the holdovers that released in 2025, it performed the best in weekend five, and hopefully it will continue to succeed in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Den of Thieves: Pantera had a 46.5% dropoff, making only $1.6 million.

What The January 31-February 2, 2025 Box Office Means For The Next Week

Love Hurts & Heart Eyes Could Make A Splash

Animated films tend to have legs at the box office, meaning that Dog Man will most likely continue to perform well in weekend six of 2025. The good word of mouth surrounding Companion means that the film is also predicted to continue doing well in weekend six. Flight Risk will probably drop out of the top 10 after its major drop. The release of Love Hurts and Heart Eyes could shake up the box office next week, meaning that another exciting weekend is in store from February 7-9.
