Gary King's sobriety issues and bad behavior would make him a terrible fit as the captain on Below Deck Sailing Yacht. Over the past few years, viewers have come to know Gary alongside other members of the Parsifal III crew, joining the show in season 2 as First Officer. While his attitude wasn't universally liked, his skills on deck were impressive. However, as the show progressed, Gary's behavior started to cause problems.
In the earlier seasons, it was clear Gary attracted drama and craved attention from women at any cost. His lack of self-control, temper, and refusal to listen to others led to behavior that eventually fueled rumors of sexual misconduct. While Gary has denied these accusations of inappropriate behavior from a Below Deck franchise makeup artist, his past actions have made it hard to discern whether his denial is credible or if it could lead to Gary being fired.
Gary Isn't The Most Favorable Cast Member Among Fans

One major reason a lot of fans want to see Gary off of the show is because of the sexual misconduct allegations against him. In August 2023, serious accusations surfaced against Gary from Samantha Suarez, a former makeup artist on the show. She accused Gary of sexual misconduct during the filming of season 4, claiming that Gary forcibly confined her in his hotel room.
Viewers are not happy with how the show has downplayed the incident, so promoting Gary to captain would be an even bigger slap in the face. A captain is expected to demonstrate professionalism and maintain appropriate boundaries for the crew and guests. Based on Gary’s past actions, it seems he may not be well-suited to handle these vital responsibilities.
Gary Is Too Much Of A Party Boy
He Couldn't Keep His Sobriety
Throughout the history of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Gary has been one of the crew members with the most issues. His actions in the most recent season have shown that he can't be relied on, particularly when it comes to what he says or does on camera. After struggling with alcohol and relentless partying for years, Gary announced he would try sobriety and address some personal challenges.
However, Gary's attempt at sobriety was short-lived and wasn’t something he seemed committed to beyond Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. His behavior didn’t show significant improvement over the season, except when he was focused on staying sober, but it was apparent that his efforts were more about the charter season and the cameras than a genuine long-term change. Someone who cannot tone down drinking or partying to better their life is not fit to be a captain.

His Behavior Is Completely Inappropriate
While Gary’s partying usually stays confined to crew nights out, that doesn't mean it won't affect his career. Crew nights out are a regular feature on Below Deck shows, with the crew heading to local spots like restaurants, bars, and clubs to unwind and bond, creating moments for the audience. However, Gary doesn’t handle drinking well, often exhibiting inappropriate behavior.
When Gary drinks, his personality changes. Even though he knows he's being filmed, he becomes angry and emotional and often seeks attention, highlighting his deeper issues with alcohol and other substances. Unfortunately, Gary hasn’t had the time or space to address these issues and improve his behavior, which would make him a terrible captain on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
