I Love Song Kang’s K-Drama Career, But I’m Still Waiting For This One Project To Happen

Among the many K-dramaactors on the rise right now, Song Kang is one who has really stood out to me, and though his career has been impressive so far, there's one project I really want to see him do. Kang's career first began in 2017 when he earned a supporting role in the K-drama, The Liar and His Lover. From there, Kang only continued to prove his skill, not only as a love interest, but as a leading man. Thus, Kang has become a beloved K-drama star, making viewers like me anticipate every project in his future.

Within Kang's notable resume, there are a few projects that especially stick out. For example, his leading role in 2019's Love Alarm really put him on the map as a rising Netflix K-drama star, while 2021's Nevertheless cemented him as a fantastic romantic lead. One of the most important, though, is 2020's Sweet Home, which showed that Kang can lead a darker, edgier kind of drama. In this way, Kang is on the road to even more exciting and unexpected projects, and I know exactly what he should do when he returns to the screen.

Song Kang Has Yet To Star In A Movie After Many Successful K-Dramas

Why A Movie Makes Sense For Kang

I think that Kang should try his hand at movies in the near future. Some may be surprised to learn that Kang has yet to actually star in a film, though he has starred in several K-dramas. In some ways, looking at the trajectory of his career, this trend makes sense. Kang only rose to fame a few years ago, and he has appeared in at least one K-drama every year since, which means he has been decidedly busy. Furthermore, there seems to be a trend among K-drama actors wherein they transition to movies as they get older.

Of course, I don't think Kang is particularly old, at just 30, yet I think a movie would make sense for him. Thus far, the actor has dipped his toes into various different genres, from your typical K-drama romance to fantasy to sci-fi. Audiences have seen him in many different lights now, and are used to him changing things up. Therefore, I think starring in a movie would be a fresh switch-up for Kang and will give him the opportunity to try out another format and another type of character that he has never played before.

Another reason why a movie would be perfect for Kang is because he is currently taking a break from acting to carry out his military service. In April 2024, Kang officially enlisted in the South Korean military, forcing him to take a 18-21 month hiatus. Because of this, audiences are incredibly eager for Kang to return to the screen. More than that, we are all wondering what his first project back will be, especially following the series finale of Sweet Home. As of now, audiences know nothing, so a movie would come as a pleasant surprise.

While Kang's return comes with plenty of excitement, there are also expectations that the actor will have to reach as well. Kang's performance in Sweet Home was a massive boost to his career, setting the stage for something even better now that it's over. Arguably, Kang would be doing himself a disservice by taking on a project that is too similar to what he has already done. A movie is a perfect diversion. By starring in a movie, Kang will have to prove that he can build a realistic character in just two hours rather than ten episodes.

What Kind Of Film Song Kang Should Star In After His K-Drama Success

Kang Has Never Played A Villain

It is one thing to suggest Kang appears in a movie, but another to choose genre. I believe that Kang could ace just about any role, but it would be particularly exciting to see him in something dramatic or action-oriented. As cute as it is to see Kang in a sweet romantic role, he has the ability to show much more depth through a serious drama. On the other hand, an action movie could show his more physical side. Perhaps a thriller could marry these two ideas, leading to a project that works to Kang's strengths but also feels new.

Notably, Kang has never played a villain before. It would be awesome to see him try out this new type of role, all while he's appearing in his very first movie. This would really surprise audiences, and would set the project apart from anything Kang has done before. Then again, too much change could be overkill. Either way, Song Kang has endless K-drama options when his military service ends, and I'm eager to discover what his next move will be.
