"Just Incredible": GRRM Shares His Glowing Review Of New Game Of Thrones Show, But Warns Certain Fans "This One May Not Satisfy You"

George R.R. Martin shares a glowing review of the new Game of Thrones show, but warns certain fans that "this one may not satisfy you." The author's still ongoing fantasy saga, A Song of Ice and Fire, was adapted into the HBO show Game of Thrones, which became a cultural phenomenon and has launched a considerable franchise based on Martin's works. The first spinoff was House of the Dragon, based on Martin's Fire & Blood and set nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones, which is two seasons deep with a third on the way.

After the massive success of Game of Thrones, which ended in 2019, HBO began developing multiple successor series. This includes Bloodmoon starring Naomi Watts, which filmed a pilot episode before HBO decided not to move forward with the series. Other projects in various stages of development include 10,000 Ships, a Jon Snow sequel series with Kit Harington reprising his role (which was shelved), and a prequel series about Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros. However, only one Game of Thrones spinoff in development has actually been ordered to series.

GRRM Shares A Glowing Review Of Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

It's "Incredible," But Might Not Be For Everyone

George R.R. Martin shares a glowing review of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, calling it "incredible" but warning that it might not be for everyone. Based on the author's Dunk and Egg novellas, the upcoming series is set a century before Game of Thrones and follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a hedge knight, and his squire Aegon, a prince of the Targaryen dynasty. Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell lead Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' cast alongside Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Tanzyn Crawford, Daniel Ings, Sam Spruell, and many more.

On the "Not a Blog" portion of his website, George R.R. Martin shared a glowing review of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms after watching rough cuts of season 1's six episodes. The author "loved them" and called it "as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for." However, he warned that "viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you." Read his full comments below:

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, for starts. It’s done. Ira and his team wrapped the first season months ago, and moved right on to post production. I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm. and Tanselle Too-Tall.

A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS is an adaptation of “The Hedge Knight,” the first of the novellas I wrote about them. It’s as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how increedibly reasonable I am on that particular subject). Viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you. There’s a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers… this is a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means. “The Hedge Knight” was published between A GAME OF THRONES and A CLASH OF KINGS in Robert Silverberg’s epic anthology LEGENDS, and was so popular that it brought tens of thousands of new readers to Westeros. Sales of my novels were much higher after LEGENDS than before, and for that I credit Silverbob, and Anne Groell, and Dunk and Egg. This one ranks as one of the best stories I’ve ever written, and I am so so so pleased that Ira Parker, Ti Mikkel, Aziza Barnes (may they rest in peace), Owen Harris, and our astonishing cast and crew did right by them.

In his post, Martin also seemingly confirmed that season 2, based on The Sworn Sword, is already in the works.

What GRRM's Review Means For A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

It's Reassuring After His Reaction To House Of The Dragon Season 2

Martin's glowing review of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is reassuring after his reaction to House of the Dragon season 2, the author publicly criticizing changes made to the Blood and Cheese storyline. Martin's review of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms indicates the show is a much more faithful adaptation of The Hedge Knight, his first of three Dunk and Egg novellas. Martin's comments also contain an important disclaimer – A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms doesn't contain much action, as it's "a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means."

Martin says A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut "late this year," possibly in the fall of 2025.
