Magic: The Gathering's New Movie & TV Universe Has A Built-In Reason For A D&D Crossover

One of the most exciting announcements in fantasy may be Magic: The Gathering getting its own movie and TV universe, especially considering its potential to cross over with Dungeons & Dragons. Magic: The Gathering is seeing expansion in 2025 with its Dark Horse Comics collaboration, proving that Wizards of the Coast is invested in this brand in every sense of the word. The Dark Horse Comics collaboration also thrillingly extends to Dungeons & Dragons. But now, Magic: The Gathering is giving Dungeons & Dragons more chance to shine than ever — on-screen.

Magic: The Gathering has an animated series in development at Netflix and additionally confirmed a live-action movie and TV universe in partnership with Legendary Entertainment, which produced Godzilla vs. Kong and Dune (via Variety). Hasbro owns Wizards of the Coast, which owns both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Hasbro sold its production company eOne in 2023 after financial difficulty, getting the D&D live-action TV show paused indefinitely. Meanwhile, the Dungeons & Dragons movies have varied greatly in quality, but D&D could rise again through Magic: The Gathering's cinematic universe.

How Magic: The Gathering's Upcoming Movie & TV Universe Can Cross Over With Dungeons & Dragons

Some Of D&D's Best Stories Are Built Into Magic: The Gathering

As Hasbro has full rights to Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, its live-action MTG universe can make full use of both. It is likely to do so, considering its Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms crossover set. Magic: The Gathering shouldn't copy Dungeons & Dragons' new movie (Honor Among Thieves) in the humor department, considering the serious tone of the game. However, MTG should certainly use D&D's best characters in its new live-action universe, which its card set already does, including Lolth and Drizzt Do'Urden.

A Magic: The Gathering/Dungeons & Dragons Crossover Would Rival Other Major Shared Universes

Hasbro Has Its Shot At An Exceptional Magic: The Gathering Multiverse

The Magic: The Gathering TV and movie universe opens the door to a multiverse for Hasbro which could rival other movie and TV shared universes. Magic: The Gathering's crossover sets span franchises as diverse as Lord of the Rings and Doctor Who, which may, one day, create TV crossover moments to dethrone Marvel or DC. Hasbro Entertainment, shepherding the MTG show, currently only has rights to the other brands on its roster. Still, even just a MTG/D&D crossover has huge potential, especially considering the massive fanbase of D&D's Forgotten Realms highlights, including elements of the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist campaign.

Drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden and his enemy, Lolth, were created by American writer R. A. Salvatore for his Forgotten Realms books. Drizzt was introduced in Salvatore's first published novel, 1988's The Crystal Shard, the start of The Icewind Dale Trilogy. He went on to be a firm fan-favorite, inspiring graphic novels, comics, video games, and more. With D&D spanning myriad worlds and characters, Magic: The Gathering chose its D&D set wisely. The Magic: The Gathering live-action universe will start with a movie and expand into TV, so there is more than enough time for its D&D crossover.
