Riley Tricks Matt Into A Therapy Session In Shifting Gears Season 1, Episode 4 Clip [EXCLUSIVE]

ScreenRant is proud to present an exclusive sneak peek of ABC's Shifting Gears, which stars comedy legend Tim Allen and Marvel's Kat Dennings. The sitcom follows a widowed owner of a car restoration shop whose life is turned upside down when his estranged daughter moves in with her children. Season 1, episode 4, titled, "Grief," airs on Wednesday, January 29, and the official synopsis reads: "When Riley discovers a closet filled with her late mother’s clothes, she insists Matt hasn’t processed her death and urges him to see a grief counselor. Meanwhile, Gabriel faces a crisis of confidence when he’s put in charge of the shop for a day."

The clip opens with Matt and Riley in what the former thinks is a joint therapy session. Rather than making a real effort, Matt pokes fun at the therapist's young age and the fact that she's still a student. Riley isn't surprised at his attempt to deflect and warns that he'll also rant about people's lack of work ethic and sense of entitlement. Before the conversation can go much further, Riley runs out of the room to catch an Uber, causing Matt to realize he's been duped by his daughter.

More About Shifting Gears On ABC

Created By Mike Scully and Julie Thacker-Scully

Shifting Gears first aired on Wednesday, January 8, setting a record for ABC. The pilot episode received 6.2 million same-day views and has amassed almost 17 million viewers across multiple platforms. This makes Tim Allen and Kat Dennings' new comedy the network's most-watched series premiere since The Conners debuted in October 2018. Seann William Scott, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis are also included in the main cast.

There is plenty to enjoy about the series, with Allen and Dennings' father-daughter chemistry at the story's center. When speaking with ScreenRant, showrunner Michelle Nader shares that their heartfelt moment in the pilot served as her "north star." Shifting Gears is categorized as a comedy, but Nader also wants to capture real moments that will resonate with viewers. "Grief" could be the perfect opportunity to dive further into the characters' shared loss and bring them closer together.
