State Preserves Coastal Woodlands at Flax Pond

New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation acquired a six-acre plot of coastal woodland at Flax Pond in Suffolk County for $2 million. The plot will be added to the adjacent Flax Pond State Tidal Wetland. Officials say protecting the acreage will preserve water quality in Long Island Sound and help reinforce vulnerable coastal areas against storms.
