Sue Storm Wasn't Always a Hero: How Invisible Woman's Secret Past Makes Her Fantastic Four's Deadliest Member

While the Fantastic Four's Sue Storm is best known for being the Invisible Woman, for a brief moment she was Malice. Thanks to Psycho-Man's abilities, he brought forth a dark side of Sue Storm, one who was a more than a worthy threat to the rest of the Fantastic Four. This version of Sue embodies a lot of her repressed, negative feelings and insecurities, but eventually she returns to herself.

This is not the only other life Sue Storm has led outside the Fantastic Four; however, another former endeavor of hers did not put her at odds with her family like Malice did. In the Invisible Woman's first solo series, Invisible Woman by Mark Waid, Mattia De Iulis, and Joe Caramagna, it's revealed that Sue Storm was a spy for S.H.I.E.L.D. for a period of time while still being a member of the Fantastic Four.

Between her time as a spt and her brief time as Malice, Sue Storm has proven she is the most powerful and dangerous member of the Fantastic Four.

In 2019, the Invisible Woman received her first solo series, fifty-eight years after her first appearance in Marvel Comics. In this five-issue series, Sue Storm is alerted that her former S.H.I.E.L.D. partner from a past espionage mission has been kidnapped by international terrorists. While not officially on the books, Sue Storm accepts this mission to save her former friend and ally, forcing her to get back into the spy game.

Invisible Woman lets Sue Storm shine on her own, and it puts her in a unique position.

Invisible Woman lets Sue Storm shine on her own, and it puts her in a unique position. Instead of her traditional acts of heroism, which already prove that Invisible Woman deserves to be an Avenger, Sue Storm is thrown into the world of espionage, and she is great at being a spy. Along with her abilities lending themselves to espionage, she has the wits of a great spy. This series also emphasizes how dangerous and deadly Sue Storm can be; however, she often holds herself back to save and spare lives.

Sue Storm can control what is and isn't visible, and the Invisible Woman can generate force fields that are beyond god-level. While these powers are excellent for stealth missions, like during her Invisible Woman series, they have the potential for a lot more than that. Her force fields, for instance, are excellent defense, but they can be brutal offense as well, if used in a certain way. By the end of Invisible Woman, Sue lays it all out there, expressing how easy it would be to kill anyone who crossed her or threatened humanity, but she chooses not to go down such a dark path.

Sue is not just talk, though, and Invisible Woman's true power is not something to mess with. When she is Malice and giving in to a darker side of herself, she fully shows off how dangerous her powers can be. In fact, Psycho-Man wants to destroy the Fantastic Four, and the member he uses to do so is none other than Sue Storm. The Fantastic Four animated series even adapted the Malice storyline, showing how much of a threat Sue Storm could be, proving to be more than a match for each member of her beloved team.

Even beyond these other personas, Sue Storm is recognized in-universe as the most dangerous member of the Fantastic Four. For instance, when Black Cat attempts to break into the Fantastic Four's home in Black Cat #4 by Jed MacKay and Travel Foreman, the member she fears the most is Sue Storm. Invisible Woman is a force to be reckoned with, whether that is when she is serving a hero for the Fantastic Four, working as a spy for S.H.I.E.L.D., or walking a dark path as her villainous alternate persona, Malice.

Invisible Woman is available now from Marvel Comics.
