The CW Sets Release Date For New Sherlock Holmes Series

The CW has set its official premiere date for the series Sherlock & Daughter. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective franchise has seen numerous adaptations over the years, including the Guy Ritchie film Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. and the BBC series Sherlock. The CW's entry into the IP will see David Thewlis step in to play the iconic detective and Blu Hunt a young American, Amelia. The series will follow the duo, who work to solve the case of Amelia's mother's murder, while Amelia also seeks to prove Sherlock is her long-lost father.

Per Deadline, the CW has set the premiere date for Sherlock & Daughter. The series will premiere on Wednesday, April 16, at 9 pm ET. The network also announced premieres of other series, including Remarkable Women and Sullivan's Crossing season 3.

The full release schedule for Sherlock & Daughter was not specified, but it can be assumed that the show will keep its Wednesday 9 pm to 10 pm ET slot for future weeks. The CW's Wednesday premiere of Sullivan's Crossing season 3 will be at 8 pm, clearing the way for Sherlock & Daughter to maintain its 9 pm slot. The Doyle-adapted series is set to have an eight-episode run, so barring any off weeks, its finale will likely air on Wednesday, June 4.

Sherlock & Daughter is an interesting entry into the wider Sherlock cinematic and television universe, as it greatly expands on Doyle's original texts. While some existing series and movies have added characters and strayed from the source material significantly, the Amelia plotline introduces a new potential Holmesian backstory. While Doyle's stories never introduced such a plot, Leonard Goldberg's version features Sherlock's daughter, Joanna, but she is the child of Irene Adler. Amelia is described as a Native-American woman and thus would not have the same backstory as the literary Joanna, even if she is confirmed to be Sherlock's daughter.

This CW announcement means that Sherlock & Daughter will work its way onto the release calendar before another anticipated Sherlock show hits the small screen. Ritchie is set to direct an origin story-style series called Young Sherlock, which features Hero Fiennes Tiffin playing the detective in his younger years. Though the release date for this series has not yet been revealed, Sherlock & Daughter's April release date almost certainly positions it before Young Sherlock, leaving it less to be compared to upon its initial release.
