Showrunner Lauren LeFranc addresses The Penguin's success and reveals whether she would like to make a similar project centered around another DC character. The Penguin is the first spinoff in Matt Reeves' The Batman universe. Speaking to ScreenRant at the 2025 Golden Globes, The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc expresses her satisfaction with the show's overwhelmingly positive reception. LeFranc defends The Penguin's limited series nature and confirms that a direct follow-up will only be made with "the right idea or the right characters". LeFranc also says she would "be honored" to helm a new project in Matt Reeves' The Batman universe, but explains she would only tackle the project if she found "something unique and different" with the characters. Lauren LeFranc: We were meant to be a limited series, so I'm really proud of the first season and the story that we made. There's more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters.
I'm not sure about that yet, but I'm really proud of the work that we've done.
ScreenRant: Is there another character that you'd like to take a crack at in bringing into the Matt Reeves Universe?
Lauren LeFranc: For me, it's just about making sure I can find a personal connection to that character and feel like I can do something unique and different with them. That's what I felt like I found with Oz, and then in that world, I was able to bring in Sofia and all these other characters. So, for me, it's always seeking something personal. And if I can latch onto that, I'd be honored to.

In this golden age of live-action comic book adaptations, it would be easy to greenlight multiple spinoffs to The Batman and multiple seasons after The Penguin's success. However, The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc and The Batman director Matt Reeves have been very clear in their intention to keep the franchise limited strictly to its necessary installments. Reeves still plans to make a standalone trilogy, and LeFranc insists on calling The Penguin a limited series. Of course, The Penguin's success makes a second season possible, and both Lauren LeFranc and main star Colin Farrell have left the door open for an eventual return, but The Penguin season 2 will only happen if it can match the first season's quality.

The Penguin Season 2 And Other The Batman Spinoffs Are Possible

The Penguin's high-rated eight episodes prove that there's plenty of material to explore in a potential second season. The Penguin finale ending alone sets up future storylines for Oz Cobb as an even more ruthless criminal, with no loved ones to ground him anymore, and with higher ambitions in a corrupt Gotham City. A second season could introduce new threats that could test Oz's darker morals, either to make him a more dangerous villain or to help him repent. While Oz Cobb's arc could be completed through his appearances in The Batman - Part II and The Batman - Part III, a second season would flesh it out much more smoothly.

Lauren LeFranc could also take a break from the Penguin's story and explore a different DC character in the same universe. The Batman's Catwoman, Riddler, Joker, and James Gordon have the potential to star in a show just as good as The Penguin, and other characters like Scarecrow, Hush, Mister Freeze, and Azrael could follow the same type of narrative and style as The Penguin. Matt Reeves' and Lauren LeFranc's The Batman franchise benefits from its self-contained nature, but it also has a lot of potential for many more projects that can't simply be ignored.
