Where Was Severance Filmed? All Locations Explained

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Severance.Among the most celebrated aspects of Apple TV+'s series, Severance, are the show's gorgeous and mind-bending visuals and sets. This acclaimed series used many real-world locations, most of which are in New York and New Jersey, to bring the eye-catching dystopian drama to life. At the same time, the production team used plenty of studio space to create Lumon Industries in Severance, including its maze-like severed floor.

The characters in Severance and their unique struggles are the main draw of the series. Nevertheless, the show stands out for its artistic design, with the eye-catching sets and cinematography drawing viewers into the unusual world that seems to be ruled by Lumon. Such a cinematic achievement was no easy feat, as it required the collaboration of the production and the generous people to build Severance from the ground up with its many locations.

Bell Works, Holmdel Township, New Jersey

This Historic Garden State Building Was Used To Create Lumon Industries

To create the Lumon Industries building in the town of Kier, the creators of Severance used the Bell Labs Holmdel Complex located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Currently known as the Bell Works, this historic building used to be the site for groundbreaking research for the Bell Labs division of AT&T. However, Bell Labs was redeveloped into the Bell Works business center in 2013, turning this research hub into a mixed-use building housing a variety of shops, restaurants, office spaces, etc.

For the production of Severance seasons 1 and 2, Bell Works was used to film exterior, parking lot, ground floor, and above-ground shots. Mark (Adam Scott) is usually seen walking through the inside of Bell Works when he goes to work eachmorning, just before he takes the elevator to the severed floor. Many other characters, particularly the higher-ups at Lumon, are even seen walking through the rooms and halls overlooking the Bell Works parking lot, symbolizing their status above the employees of their company.

York Studios, Bronx, New York

This Production Studio Was Used To Create Lumon's Severed Floor

While Bell Works was used to create the exterior of Lumon Industries, filming the scenes on the severed floor was a lot more complicated. The white labyrinthine office where the severed employees spend their days was created at York Studios in the Bronx. It's no surprise that a set was used to build the severed floor, as it is such a vast and complex area with a variety of rooms.

Likewise, the camerawork used to film the scenes on the severed floor breaks the boundaries of such a confined space, requiring the flexibility of a film studio for the production team to work their magic. For instance, York Studios was used to film that spectacular long tracking shot of Mark running through the severed floor in the opening scene of Severance season 2, episode 1, which is said to have required weeks of planning and many days of shooting (via elledecor.com).

Kingston, New York

Many Locations In The Town Of Kier Were Filmed In Kingston

ThoughNew Jersey is a prominent filming location for Severance, many of the show's notable landmarks were captured in Kingston in New York State. For example, Eng's Restaurant was used to create Zufu, a restaurant that appears in season 2. The Red Owl Collective antique store was used for the exterior shot of Great Doors, the door manufacturer where Dylan (Zach Cherry) is interviewed for a job.

Irving (John Turturro) is also seen sitting at a park bench in season 1, episode 8, which can be found at Cornell Park across from the Celebration Wedding Chapel. Likewise, the exterior of Irving's apartment is at Waterfront at the Strand Apartments in Kingston. The show's production team even filmed at the Kingston-Port Ewen Suspension Bridge for the bridge scene in season 1, episode 2. The same episode sees Mark driving under the Rondout Train Trestle, which reappears when Mark meets with Reghabi (Karen Aldridge) in season 2, episode 3.

Nyack, New York

Several Other Kier Hotspots Were Filmed In Nyack

Another notable location in Severance is Baird Creek Manor, a neighborhood subsidized by Lumon Industries. Many scenes in seasons 1 and 2 have been shot here since outie Mark and Mrs. Selvig's (Patricia Arquette) houses are located in this quiet part of the town of Kier. Filming for these scenes took place in the Village Gate Townhouses in Nyack, New York, less than 30 miles away from New York City.

Also filmed in Nyack were scenes where Mark goes on a dinner date with Alexa (Nikki M. James) in season 1. Both characters are seen eating at a restaurant that is really the Hudson House. The gas station where Petey (Yul Vazquez) dies is reportedly the Gulf Gas Station on the corner of Route 9W and Christian Herald Road (via atlasofwonders.com). Time Out states that shooting for the series took place at the Two Villains Brewing microbrewery as well.

Marine Park Golf Course, Brooklyn, New York

This Outdoor Golf Course Was Used To Create The Goat Room

Severance season 2, episode 3 shows Mark and Helly (Britt Lower) exploring Lumon Industries in search of Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Their investigation takes them back to the mysterious Goat Wrangling department introduced in season 1. There, they end up in the Mammalian's Nurturable room, a large, indoor field with green hills where Lumon employees raise the goats within their own community.

Though it seems like the Goat Room was created on a studio set, the scenes in this bizarre department were actually filmed at Marine Park Golf Course in Brooklyn. Vulture reported that the production team behind Severance put a tent over a piece of the public golf course and used CGI to construct the walls and ceiling to make it look like an indoor farm. In the end, the show creators succeeded in building a realistic farmland within Lumon's office.

Ulster County, New York

Multiple Locations In Ulster County Helped Create Woe's Hollows & Kier

Severance season 2, episode 4 took the Refiners outside Lumon Industries and placed them in the snowy wilderness at Dieter Eagan National Forest for an Outdoor Retreat Team Building Occurrence (ORTBO). This otherworldly episode was filmed at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve in Ulster County, New York. During their excursion, the Refiners come across the breathtaking waterfall of Woe's Hollow, which is really the park's Awosting Falls.

Along with Dieter Eagan National Forest, many other places in the town of Kier were filmed in towns located in Ulster County. For example, season 1, episode 5 features a scene at the Damon Birthing Retreat, where Devon meets Gabby Arteta (Nora Dale), the severed wife of Senator Arteta (Ethan Flower). The Birthing Retreat scene was filmed using the exterior of the Mohonk Preserve Testimonial Gateway in New Paltz.

Additionally, the pilot episode of Severance shows Mark's outie meeting with his innie's former co-worker Petey at a diner called Pip's Bar & Grille. This scene featuring these two old pals was shot at the retro Phoenicia Diner in Ulster County. Mark's outie is seen there once again talking with Devon (Jen Tullock) in season 2.

Westchester County, New York

Near the end of Severance season 1 and the start of season 2, Mark has some pivotal moments at the house of his sister, Devon, and her husband, Ricken (Michael Chernus). Their home is actually the Bier House, which was built in 1949 in the Usonia Historic District not far from Pleasantville, which is located in Westchester County, New York.

Another location in Westchester used for filming Severance is the Trinity Lutheran Church in White Plains. This church was used for the scene depicting Petey's funeral, which Mark and Ms. Cobel attend inseason 1, episode 4. Speaking of Petey, Mark's outie meets with him in season 1, episode 2, in a greenhouse at Sprainbrook Nursery. This old garden center in Scarsdale is where Petey gives Mark his map of Lumon's severed floor, not long before his untimely death.

Beacon, New York

For Severance season 1, episode 2, the city of Beacon in Dutchess County was used to film specific scenes set in the town of Kier. According to Atlas of Wonders, the scene in which Mark is on a date with Alexa was shot in Downtown Beacon. Many storefronts in Beacon were renamed by the Severance team to turn the city into Kier, with the production blocking off streets and parking lots during shooting.

Said scene also features Mark encountering an anti-severance protester while the latter is handing out fliers outside the town's Hall of Records. This location in Kier is really the Beacon Building on Main Street. Additionally, the Poughkeepsie Journalclaimed that, at 1 East Main Street in Beacon, the rooftop and balcony of a building were used to film nighttime exterior shots for Severance.

Yonkers, New York

One of the most remarkable locations on Lumon's severed floor is the Perpetuity Wing, which the Macrodata Refiners tour in season 1, episode 3. This vast museum features several exhibits exploring the history of Lumon Industries and the mysterious Eagan family, including a replica of Kier Eagan's (Marc Gellar) house. However, Severance production designer Jeremy Hindle (via Atlas of Wonders) that the Kier house replica was too big for the production team to construct themselves at a film studio.

Fortunately, the team behind Severancefound what they needed to create the Perpetuity Wing at a real museum in the Bronx. Kier's house, in particular, was filmed at the 1877 Gilded Age Glenview House on display in the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers. According to Atlas of Wonders, filming also took place in the Pietro Drive neighborhood in Yonkers.
