Why Phoenix Won't Shut Down Trails in Excessive Heat

Even with multiple heat-related rescue calls this summer, Parks and Recreation says hikers can keep hiking.

Summer hiking in Phoenix is no joke–heat can be excessive, and people who hit the trails without water and the proper gear often run into trouble (like the six heat-related rescue calls just last weekend). But Phoenix’s Parks and Recreation Department officials say they won’t close down trails when it’s very hot. Instead, the city is allowing hiking until 11 p.m. in summer to encourage people to walk when it’s cooler out and increasing ranger presence on the hottest days.
